In the USA, Generation X is composed of 46 million people born between 1965 and 1980. It is easy to understand why Gen X-ers dismiss the concepts of career ladders and job security. After they saw their parents go up career ladders that got knocked down and carted away to places where pensions and other job benefits were already buried, Gen X-ers were on notice to find new ways to work. Here are some ways to help Gen-Xers succeed at work: 1. Help them obtain realistic career decision-making and career management information, tools and resources. 2. Help them to understand and act on reality. 3. Help them to value, acquire and use people skills as well as their technical skills. 4. Help them figure out what is unique and special about what they bring to their work. 5 Help them understand what recognition they want, and how to go about getting it in a work place context.
