While the accompanying text suggests that Serrano's marginalized black subjects are lent dignity in the act of being photographed, the conventions of the studio portrait through which they are aestheticized as a spectacle to be consumed seem only to reconfirm the flneurial mastery of the visitor as the detached possessor of all that we see.
