Hongda Chen (US Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, Washington, DC) discussed the use of nanoparticles to trace products, to improve the delivery of micronutrients and bioactive compounds, and, as a component of packaging materials, to reduce food storage losses and prevent post-production contamination. Another symposium considered the question, "Consumers' refrigerators: A danger zone?" Sheryl Cates of RTI International (Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA) conducted a survey of consumer practices with respect to refrigerated ready -to-eat foods to ascertain ways to reduce the incidence of listeriosis.
