Volume reduction is, perhaps, the most noticeable current trend in the automotive sector, says Paul Dyer, Managing Director, DHL Automotive UK. Dyer says that many manufacturers have underutilization of their plants -- or of their supply chains. There are opportunities to improve plant infrastructure utilization by bringing supply chain activities on-site, even if they are operated by third parties. Collaboration reduces the cost base, utilizes spare capacity and reduces empty running, so it fits both the low cost supplier agenda and the CO2 agenda. The market downturn has given real impetus to collaboration, and in current conditions it can offer double digit cost benefits -- to everyone, concludes Dyer.
