There is a new trend in CUSOs. More and more often, these companies are built of multiple organizations that work together closely but are housed in widely scattered locations. In a few cases, there is no longer any physical location at all; the CUSOs only exist virtually. Open Technology Solutions, a technology CUSO based in suburban Denver, was founded in 2003 as a joint partnership between Bellco Credit Union in Denver and Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Long Island, NY. The CUSO may be technically a for-profit organization, but it's not designed that way. Services are provided at cost to the owner credit unions, and expenses are split equally and invoiced each month to the four participating CUs. By going off site, CUSOs are breaking new ground in collaborative CU services. But some of the organizations have gone one step further and become completely virtual. The CUSO has even managed to lower the cost of employee benefits by an average of about 30%.
