During the summit meeting from 13 to 14 July in Paris of 43 leaders of the European Union and the Mediterranean littoral countries Sarkozy said: 'For our future to be a future of security, justice and progress, we have to work very hard and do like the Europeans when they decided among themselves to end an era of wars and violence. Through whirlwind efforts in the field of diplomacy by Sarkozy and his competent ministers, the Foreign secretary Bernard Kouchner and Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the Minister for Europe, as well as Ms. Rama Yade, the secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Human Rights, the ground was laid extremely well for the summit. With the background of a failed Treaty of Lisbon, due to the no-vote in the Irish Referendum, Sarkozy had also turned on the Polish President and criticised him for declining to sign the Treaty.\n This reflects the success of the Erasmus exchanges in the EU, more than a million students now having exchanged since 1992.
