While the fate of a 2009 defense spending bill waiting final passage remains uncertain during this election year session, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense (HAC-D) marked up the bill Sept. 9 with a number of comments on Air Force programs. The panel supported the Transformational Satellite communications program, which will provide increased protected satellite communications bandwidth, and the Wideband Global System program for increased unprotected satellite communications bandwidth in the near term Second, the committee further recommended $650 million of space segment funding, including a recommendation that re-certification for the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Systems Nunn-McCurdy not be obligated or expended until the secretary of defense provides further information to the congressional defense committees.
