As the author write this column, his bank, his community and his family have been picking up the pieces from one of the worst hurricanes to strike their area since 1900, Hurricane Ike. Their beachfront community of Jamaica Beach has experienced serious erosion. But, all in all, the community of 1,369 homes fared better than anticipated. The good news: they are all safe and the rebuilding has begun. Thanks to the emergency preparedness and disaster recovery plans crafted by banks in the area they are in much better shape than they would have been in the past.
