Over the years she's returned to Broadway in The Amen Corner (1965), The Skin of Our Teeth (1975) and Vieux Carr (1977), among other plays; appeared in films, including Shaft; written and directed her own work; won several AUDELCO awards; and, in 2002, received Actors' Equity's Paul Robeson Award. H.A.D.L.E.Y. found a long-term resting place and its current identity in the basement of St. Philip's, which the company renovated into a midsized space where patrons, usually African-American men and women of a certain age-folks who would be attending church services on Sunday anyway-sat on folding chairs before a small, curtainless stage. Often, if a patron came for an opening matinee, there would be a buffet dinner with ribs, fried and barbecued chicken and yellow rice served out of chafing dishes and punch ladled into Dixie cups.
