Photographs and illustrations on each page do a better job explaining the symbolism than does the text, which, though adequate in translation, oversimplifies the concepts to the point of confusion. The text, including sidebars with unusual facts, will maintain readers' interest while fully covering the basics: diet, physical characteristics, reproduction, etc. Kids will enjoy identifying old-fashioned radios and other outdated objects, but the series is marred by overly simplistic comparisons, occasionally stilted Spanish, and uneven back matter (for example, La vida en Ia escuela has only one glossary entry).
