Americans have extremely high fuel prices and an unrealistic price differential between gasoline and diesel fuel. Twice as many trucking companies are failing this year as last, and yet their politicians don't seem to understand there is a problem. They are probably the largest nation on earth without any sort of energy policy. The high price differential isn't about refining capacity -- it's about refining balance. US refineries have been "tweaked" over the years to maximize gasoline production. This was a sound strategy when gasoline demand was increasing. High gasoline prices caused users to drive fifty million miles less last year. However, diesel users don't have the option of driving fewer miles unless freight volumes decline.
