The final event of the year will be the California Hot Rod Reunion presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California, Oct. 10-12, in Bakersfield, Calif. A/Fuel points leader Kin Bates had the field covered during qualifying with a 6.34, 223.02-mph blast in his Gene Adams-tuned U.S. Air Force dragster, but the run came with a heavy price tag as the Anderson, Calif.-based team damaged the engine and was unable to make the call for the opening round of eliminations. On a 7.60 index, 23 racers attempted to exactly hit that number during qualifying, and veteran Jimmy Scott came the closest, running a 7.607 in his front-engine dragster to earn a bye run in the opening round.
