Many have used or at least been exposed to value stream mapping (VSM). The Shingo Research Prize-winning book, Learning to See, by Mike Rother and John Shook provides a solid foundation for the concept. Many types of information are typically captured in the current state map such as electronic or paper information flow, cycle times, changeover times, inventory levels, machine uptime and number of operators, but the VSM can provide so much that's often overlooked: 1. product costing, 2. career path development, 3. environmental improvements, and 4. quality.
