I've always loved the idea of family trees, a way to trace the flow of one's lineage. I know some social studies classes have students try to track their ancestors, and although I didn't directly tie into our social studies curriculum, it would be a perfect interdisciplinary assignment. Students are ceaselessly bombarded by external information, constantly pushed to think globally. Why not have them focus on the importance of family, and how they are intimately connected to them in a meaningful way? I arrived at a perfect, albeit not totally original, solution. I would have the students create an "Object Family Tree," with the student being the center, or focus.
