Coastal Tourism Data.
Author: Kristina Drapes Project Management Pty. Ltd

Date: November 2004

Aims: Tourism is a major contributor to the NSW economy and a significant component of
regional coastal economies. Access to historic and contemporary tourism data is important for
land use planners and managers attempting to match local resources to the fluctuating
demands of regional, national and international tourism. The project aims to build an interactive
tourism-related database for the CCA study area in support of integrated land use planning and
decision making for the NSW coast.

Findings: The project delivered the Coastal Tourism Activity Monitor (CTAM) - an interactive
and updateable database containing a range of tourism data derived from recognised sources
such as Tourism Research Australia and the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse. Data can be
queried by Local Government Area and/or Statistical Local Area to derive:

    • Estimates of domestic and international tourism volumes for 1998-2003.

    • Volume/Quantity data on accommodation establishments, tour operations and visitor
        attractions for 2004.

    • Regional data grouped by Tourism Region for 2003 on a wide range of characteristics
about visitors including numbers in visitor group, visitor origin, length of stay and types
        of activities undertaken.

    • Time series (1998-2003) of overall visitation to Tourism Regions included in CCA study
        area.

    • Background information on inbound tourism and domestic tourism forecasts to 2013 for
        NSW and Australia.

Benefits of ongoing maintenance of the CTAM database through regular additions of tourism
data are discussed.

Conclusion: The CTAM database contains extensive information on tourism in the coastal
zone to 2004. It provides a template for local councils and/or the tourism industry to input
updated information, relevant to their area of interest, in order to track tourism activity and
incorporate its demands into state, regional and local planning initiatives.
