Your Name: .

Start Date: Completion Date:

The Introduction
Do you ever wonder if volcanoes were safe to live by, or if they ever did anything good
for the earth? Volcanoes are some of the most powerful and dangerous things in the
world. So why do people you know ever live close to them? Do you know what makes
them explode? What if I told you today we were going to get up close to some of the
biggest volcanoes, and find out what happened during, and after their eruptions. Would
you join an expedition to explore a volcano?

The Challenge
You are going to research the geologic history of a few historical volcanic eruptions. You
will gather information on these volcanoes and answer questions based on your internet
research. After every day you will journal something new you have learned about
volcanoes. Then you will use this gathered knowledge to build a model of a type of
volcano.

The Journey

These websites will give you the information to get you started on some historical
eruptions.

The Report: Sharing Your Results

Now based on your research you will pick one type of volcano and make a model of it.
After completing the models the students will demonstrate an eruption with them during
the class fun day. The students will then turn in their day to day journal.

Building your Volcano-
   1. Use any materials you can to make your volcano.
   2. Identify, or label the major parts of your volcano.
   3. Erupt your volcanoes during a fun day in the class.

The students will be assessed on how their volcano matches the type they chose to
research. They will also be assessed on their ability to identify the major parts of their
volcano. Please attach your journals to this science web quest form.

Teacher Space
    Grades: 4th-6th

 Some adult supervision may be needed in making the models.

Inquiry Skills Emphasized:

               1. Observing 2. Interpreting Data 3. Predicting
               4. Classifying 5. Experimenting 6. Defining operationally

Earth and Space Science CONTENT STANDARD 5-8, all students should
       develop an understanding of

ND Content Standards

4.1.1 Explain changes in the real world using a model (e.g., erosion, volcano, stream
      table, wing designs for airplanes).

4.5.2 Identify slow and rapid processes (e.g., wind, water, waves, ice, volcano,
earthquake) that are constantly changing Earth’s surface.

5.1.1 Use an appropriate model (e.g., drawing, equation, computer program, diagram,
or 3-D device) to convey scientific information.

5.2.1 Communicate scientific procedures (e.g. visual display, graph, journal, oral
presentation) that enable others to repeat the investigation.

6.1.1 Construct a model to represent concepts, features, or phenomena in the real world
      (e.g., solar system, earth’s interior).

6.7.1 Explain how natural hazards affect populations, resources, and the environment
(e.g., floods, storms, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes).
