ABSTRACT: The rehabilitation and replacement of sewer service laterals has
traditionally been a difficult, expensive and time-consuming job. They are usually
located directly beneath someone’s yard, a business entryway or a sidewalk; all of which
make open cutting the least attractive lateral rehab option from the resident’s point of
view.

An explosion in lateral pipe bursting has come about recently for several key reasons.
Inherently the method is well suited for lateral replacement. It provides a trenchless
option for lateral replacement that utilizes the existing line and allows for increase or
upsize of the original host pipe diameter.

LATERAL FOCUS
Municipalities have discovered that between 40% and 60% of all infiltration can be
attributed to deteriorated lateral services. Over the last several years, a great deal of new
lateral bursting equipment has been developed to help municipalities and homeowners
deal with lateral replacement in a fiscally responsible way that also keeps social
disruption to a minimum. For contractors what once was considered a very difficult pipe
bursting application, lateral replacement, has now become one the easiest ways to get into
pipe bursting.

STATIC BURSTING FOR LATERALS
New static bursting systems specifically designed for lateral bursting, replace service
laterals up to 150 feet. These systems are lightweight and usually include everything
needed for bursting operations. This includes bursting heads for 4- and 6-inch pipe,
winch cable, hydraulic power pack and pipe fusion equipment.
