Ohio Viticulture Research Priorities
• Evaluation of Crown Gall-free grapevines
• Evaluate cultural practices in the vineyard that optimize vine performance and fruit quality
• Develop standards of fruit maturity for varietals in Ohio in the production of premium wine
• Evaluate the effect of regional climates on fruit ripening and fruit and wine composition
• Develop protection methods from winter freeze and spring frost events
• Constantly review the literature and consult with other grape pathologists in the U.S. and around
the world to learn of new developments in disease control at institutions outside of Ohio. New
disease control methods will be tested under Ohio conditions and introduced to Ohio growers if
appropriate
• Continue to be constantly vigilant to the development of new diseases or new disease situations
and rapidly deploy information and techniques to aid Ohio growers in overcoming these problems
• Test new conventional and biorational insecticides for efficacy to vineyard pests
• Study how application timing, technique, and equipment may influence treatment efficacy and
economics
• Test pesticide alternatives that utilize pheromones, attractants, traps, parasites, predators, and
cultural practices
• Keep growers informed of new regulations, technologies, pest problems, and control methods via
industry meetings, news bulletins, research publications, web pages, and personal contacts
• Determine the efficacy and curative activity of currently available and experimental fungicides for
control of grape diseases under Ohio’s conditions
• Determine efficacy of new dormant fungicide application for early season disease control
