San Diego Chinese American Science And Engineering Association 2006 Spring Seminar
Speaker: DR. Ming-Hsiang Tsou, Associate Professor, Department of Geography, SDSU
Dr. Tsou is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, San Diego State University (http:// geography.sdsu.edu/People/Pages/tsou/index.html) . He holds a Ph.D. from University of Colorado at Boulder (2001), M.A. from State University of New York at Buffalo (1996) and B.S. from National Taiwan University (1991). He co-authored a scholarly book, “Internet GIS” with Dr. Zhong-Ren Peng at University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee in 2003, published by Wiley. For the San Diego Wildfire 2003, he created a Web-based mapping service (http://map.sdsu.edu) which were used and linked by several local government agencies (City of San Diego, County of San Diego) and the general public. As a Cartographer and GIS specialist, his research and teaching interests include Internet mapping, wireless mobile GIS, distributed GIS applications, multimedia cartography, user interface design, and software agents. He has several peer-reviewed journal articles in Cartography and GIS, Transactions in GIS, Journal of Geographical Systems, and the book chapters in “Maps and the Internet” and “Collaborative GIS”. He serves as the PI or CO-PI for several extramural funding projects ($3,099,118 in total) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the City of San Diego over the last three years. Currently, he is the CO-Chair of the NASA Earth Science Enterprise Data System – Standard Process Group and served on the Scientific Board for the International GIS PLANET conference. He received the 2004 Outstanding Faculty Award at San Diego State University.
Topic: Digital Earth (Google Earth) and GIS Technology: Changing the Way We Live in the 21st Century. Speech will be presented in English with visual aides.
The US Department of Labor identified geospatial technology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving technologies in the next decade, along with nanotechnology and biotechnology. This talk will highlight the concepts of Digital Earth and some important applications of Internet Geographic Information Systems (GIS), such as Environmental monitoring, car navigation, water quality, homeland security, and disaster management, by using Google Earth and professional GIS tools. Thank to the progress of Internet-based GIS technology and the World Wide Web, millions of people can now access geospatial data and maps in near real-time with very detail images, such as Google Earth, Google Map, Yahoo Map or MapQuest. Online map users become a huge market which is estimated more than 100 million users in U.S. Users can utilize these Web-based mapping tools to fly across mountains, zoom in from space, navigate your vacation trips, or even watching your neighbors’ swimming pools and landscape. In the future, location-based services (LBS) will provide various commercial applications for us. You might walk on a street with your cellular phone beeping a $5 discount e-coupon for a coffee shop in the next street block (the cellular phone can detect your location by GPS and then advertises all e-coupon from the nearby stores within 100 meters). The Digital Earth System can also provide early warnings to the potential dangerous areas, such as tsunami, hurricane, wildfires, and earthquakes. By adopting the Digital Earth System and geospatial technologies, we may be able to save hundreds of thousands of lives in the future.
