Appeal to the Readers
Dear readers, authors, and colleagues, The assembly issue of Economic Alternatives Magazine is before you. It is a successor of Economic Alternatives Magazine (Alternativi Magazine), which, in the last ten years, gave an opportunity to recognized and young lecturers and doctoral candidates of publishing their attitudes to various problems of the transition to a market economy. Alternatives Magazine indisputably played a positive role for confirmation the prestige of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE). What forces radical changes in UNWE conception for publication of this magazine? The first group of reasons is connected with the changes in the surroundings of UNWE. Firstly, the national economy will lose the features of a transitional economy more and more, and it will receive the features of a normal market economy with its typical problems, which are different from the present ones. Secondly, the problems of integration during the pre-accession period will be removed by much more complicated problems connected with the work of economic sections in the conditions of a strong Translator: 1
competition after the year 2007. Thirdly, internationalization and globalization will be real provocations for more and more Bulgarian firms and in a view of that, they will need of more careful study and presentment. Fourthly, the competition on the market of economic magazines will become stronger because the supply will exceed the demand. A number of magazines have a coincident audiences and the access to many magazines by Internet washes away the market boundaries. Fifthly, the readers have already had higher expectations in attitude to the extent and the scientific ground of publications based on serious theoretical and practical researches. Sixthly, recognized authors may chose between different publishers which increases the competition between the economic magazines. The second group of reasons is connected with the changes in UNWE. In the years of transition, UNWE strengthen its position as the biggest economic university in our country, from the point of view of: the number of trained students, lecturer’s and scientific potential, and the international prestige. In UNWE, many individual and collective researches, which need of a wider public presentment, are implemented. The introduction of European criteria and standards in the education put higher requirements to the educational tasks of the magazine and to the subjects, and the quality of its publications. It is obvious that UNWE needs of a magazine that responds to its prestige and which will properly represent it before the academic community. According to the new conception, the magazine of UNWE should become one of the best methodical and applied magazines of national and world economy, with a high authority in our country and abroad. Although Economic Alternatives Magazine is published by UNWE, it will not be a closed departmental magazine. It will have a national character in terms of reading audience, authors and distribution.

As until now, the publications in the magazine will concern the traditional for UNWE areas, evolving from the educational profile of the university: economics, management, law, sociology, etc. Firstly, the changes affect the increase of acts of theoretical analyses and discussions in new scientific paradigms, theories and approaches. Secondly, the publications with an interdisciplinary character will receive a bigger heaviness. For example: economics and management, economics and law, economics and sociology, etc. Thirdly, after publications with a methodological and methodical character, it will be given a preference to publications where the suggestions are substantiated both by a theoretical analysis data and a research in the practice. Fourthly, a bigger attention will be paid to publications on the European and world economy, but mainly in the context of the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union. A crucial condition for raising the standard of the magazine is motivation of recognized authors to publish in the magazine, including by placing orders with articles. Economic Alternatives Magazine rely both on authors from UNWE, and lecturers and research-workers from other Bulgarian and foreign universities and scientific organizations. The editorial board will show high requirements to the level of scripts, corresponding to good European practices. The scripts will be read and accepted for publication, if they answer the publicity announced criteria. The magazine of UNWE is with a new name, a new format, a bigger content and a new graphical design. By the new name, it is enhanced more clearly that it is speaking of an economic university magazine. The presence of the word “alternatives” shows a succession and suggests for a theoretical and methodological research character of the main publications. The new format corresponds more fully to the practice accepted for editions with an academic character. The magazine has an increased number per issue, in order to Translator: 3
permit a bigger content of publications representing results from bigger individual and collective analyses. The graphical design and the contents of the magazine reflect the Bulgarian and European practice of good economic magazines – presence of permanent structural elements, introduction of continual and changeable columns, introduction of a standard for the main columns, etc. The main directions for magazine advertisement improvement are designing and maintenance of the magazine in UNWE Web site, provision of conditions under which the magazine may be read in the Journal of Economic Literature/EconLit, advertisement of the magazine in other periodicals. Its distribution will be improved by increase of the number of magazines offered for sailing, increase of the number of places for sailing, introduction of a classical subscription to the magazine issued as a booklet, issuing the magazine in an electronic version, and provision access to the main columns by Internet against payment (in a further perspective), annually issuing an assembly issue of the magazine in English. When we edit Economic Alternatives Magazine, we will based on the following principles: academism, respect for traditions, forbearance of the different way of thinking, willingness for adoption of innovations, maintenance of a high quality standard of publications. One magazine is what its authors and readers are. Because of that, we believe that we will succeed with your help. Good luck to Economic Alternatives Magazine!
