South Carolina Therapists Manual/Directory 2008 Compiled By: Children Unlimited of Family Service Center 2712 Middleburg Drive Suite 207-A Columbia, SC 29204 1-800-922-5651 info@children-unlimited.org www.children-unlimited.org Disclaimer We have a listing of resources for families and professionals because we think they provide valuable information. Inclusion on this list does not represent endorsement. This is not a referral list. Children Unlimited, Inc. does not endorse specific treatment approaches, agencies or professionals. It is the responsibility of the parent/professional to assess the validity of the information offered its applicability to his/her personal needs. Each year we attempt to locate new therapists and update current information. Everyone who responds is included in this manual. No attempt has been made to screen or evaluate any responding therapist, as we believe that to be the right of the family. Questions were asked of the therapists that we hope will help consumers narrow down their choices. The remainder of this section will attempt to explain some of the terminology used by therapists on the questionnaire that we sent out. The therapists have been listed alphabetically by city in an effort to make it easy to locate a therapist. i How to Choose a Therapist Once you have decided to seek professional help from a therapist, finding someone can seem overwhelming. Hopefully this guide will assist you in that search. You have the right to choose the best therapist for you and your family. When you buy a car, you shop around, talk with friends and co-workers about their cars, test drive your favorite models, and talk to the salesman. You have the same rights when you hire a therapist, and the process is really the same. 1. Find out who offers therapy in your area. We have attempted to poll the field of possible therapists for you in this manual, but many other professionals are certainly available. The very best way to find a therapist is to ask your friends and other adoptive families whom they recommend. You can also look in the phone book under Counselors, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, or Clinics-Mental health. 2. Eliminate professionals with whom you already have a personal or professional relationship. When you go to a therapist for help, you want to feel free to discuss your most personal problems and thoughts without worrying if that will jeopardize your job or hurt your friendships. You also want a therapist who can listen to you and help you without worrying about how your problems or the changes you make in your life will affect his/her job or friendships. It is best to eliminate from your list anyone whom you know personally or through work. 3. Look for a therapist who shares your values about life and has similar beliefs about therapy. Being human, every therapist has his/her own individual set of values and beliefs. To help you sort out how the therapist’s thinking compare to your own, we have asked a number of questions to prepare this listing. You can ask other therapists the same questions. The answers will help you eliminate professionals outside your driving distance, those who cannot accept your insurance, or cannot work with your school. When you have narrowed the possibilities down to three or four therapists, you have the right to call these therapists and interview them over the phone or in their office. While it is not fair to expect free therapy in this interview, it is helpful for both you and the therapist to understand each other’s philosophies about therapy, modalities of treatment, fee schedules, hours of operation, qualifications, and so on. If the therapist refuses to discuss these items free of charge, you may want to think about how that affects what you need from therapy. ii 4. Seek a therapist that “feels right” for you. The relationship between you and the therapist you choose will be one of the most personal relationships you ever have. It is important for you to feel comfortable, for trust to be established, and for you to believe your therapist can help you. A therapist may have all the training available, years of experience, and lots of recommendations, but if you do not feel comfortable with him/her, you will no be able to talk honestly and openly. Find a therapist with whom you feel a connection. 5. Remember, you have the right to choose the best therapist for you and your family. If you bought a car without an engine, would you keep it? If you choose a therapist and then decide he/she really is not helpful to you, you have the right to stop therapy with that person and to find another therapist. Therapy is sometimes scary, sometimes angry, often painful, and always hard work. No therapist can save you from those feelings because that is what therapy is, and that is how change happens. However, you have the right to feel safe, loved, and understood while in therapy. If you do not, find another therapist. That is your right. Terminology Philosophies: Individual therapists offer counseling based on their training, their experience, and their philosophy of life. While therapeutic philosophies are as varied as the people who have them, there are a few broad categories into which most of their philosophies fall. • Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic: therapies concentrate on the interplay between person’s conscious and unconscious thoughts, needs, desires, etc. This is a “talk” therapy. Some of the philosophies that fall under this broad heading are Freudian, Jungian, Alderian, and Ericsonian. Behavior: therapies view all behavior whether physical or psychological as learned behavior. These therapists try to figure out what situation exists that sets off certain behavior, and then help the client to change the situation and/or behavior. Some of the techniques in this category are systematic desensitization, flooding, aversive conditioning, contracting, token economics, modeling, and constructive restructuring. • iii • Humanistic: therapies focus on the client’s ability to make choices and to grow. The therapist provides a safe place for the client to explore their current situation and find their own inner strengths. Some approaches in this category are Rogerian client-centered therapy and Gestalt. System: any approach with the word “system” in its name views the individual as part of a larger group. This may be marriage, family, or community. Therapists working with systems philosophy will help the client understand how they interact within the larger system, and how the individual changes affect the entire system. Eclectic: the therapists are comfortable using a variety of approaches and use them as different situations indicate. • • Modalities: Therapy is an interactive process; that is, a process occurring between the qualified professional and the client. The interaction can take place in a variety of modalities. • • • • • Individual: interaction takes place with single person Marital/Partners: interaction takes place with a committed couple Family: interaction occurs with entire family Group: interaction takes place with an unrelated group of people who share a common concern (divorce, substance abuse, sexual abuse) Residential Treatment: counseling is offered on an intense basis within a hospital or other place where people can live during the treatment Special Services: Therapy is usually pictured as a counselor sitting down with a client and talking about problems. While this is the most common type of therapy, other services are also sometimes available. Some therapists travel to your home and do therapy there (in-house sessions); or visit your child’s school to watch him/her there and talk to the teachers (school visits). • Family preservation services generally are many hours of therapy offered in your home over a short period of time to resolve a family crisis. • Play therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, and ropes course are all special ways to relate people, generally children, who have trouble expressing themselves with words. • Respite is a short term parenting break, such as one gets from hiring a sitter, but offered to families who cannot use the teen next door to care for their children. • • Case Management is the finding and organizing of all the services a family iv is using so that running from one to the next does not cause more stress than the help these services offer. Population Most Commonly Served: This question was asked to find out if therapists had a specialty such as sexual abuse victims, adolescents, or men. Therapist answered in a variety of ways that may or may not help you to choose the best therapist for you. Payment: Almost all therapists will accept your cash or check to pay for their services. Many will either bill your insurance for you or provide a form for you to mail. Some therapists meet the requirements of a particular insurance company, so you will want to check this out prior to deciding to use a certain therapist. The same restriction applies to Medicaid, Medicare, and medical subsidy. EAP is a program where employers assist in paying for therapy. Fees: Some therapists have set fees per hour and everyone pays that price. Other therapists charge according to your income on a sliding scale. Some therapists will work with you on setting a fair hourly fee and/or setting up a payment plan that you can manage on your income. Community Served: This is the geographical area where most therapists live. It is only within this area that the therapist would usually offer special services such as school visits or in-home visits. However, if you are willing to drive to their office, almost any therapist anywhere will work with you. Minority Therapists: Many people only feel truly comfortable talking to someone of their own ethnicity. We wanted to be able to identify those minority therapists. Therapists were asked to identify any minority indicators. Although there are only a handful of minority therapists (African American being the most commonly noted), many Caucasian therapists indicated they knew African American therapists who they could refer. Referrals: • Self referral: almost all therapists will make an appointment with you over v the telephone (self referral). • • DYS, DSS, Continuum of Care: if noted in this section, that therapist accepts referrals from these agencies that in turn generally pay for the therapy. To qualify for such payment, you must be a client of that agency. Other places that make referrals (judges, lawyers, physicians, and schools) usually will help you get the first appointment but will not pay for the therapy. Please comment on the following: Beliefs about adoption and philosophy of practice with adoptees and/or their families – I have worked w/families in therapeutic foster care settings who have ended up adopting their foster children over time. This has been satisfying to see and re-affirms my faith that “problem” children, when paired with loving, caring parents who are well informed in parenting skills, can grow into healthy, productive citizens in our society. I appreciate the fact that adoptive parents choose to bring a child into their heart and choose to love that child. Often children come from a perspective of abandonment and/or neglect; if they can come to terms with the fact that they are loved and wanted and chosen, they do much better in life. Adoption related experiences and/or training in last 5 years – I have worked on and off w/Growing Home, which is a therapeutic foster care agency. I have run support groups for these parents on a monthly basis, as well as conducted trainings on a variety of parenting issues and topics, including: attachment disorder, enhancing self-esteem in children, methods of discipline, giving children choices, running family meetings, etc. I have attended a number of conferences and workshops relating to this as well. -7Name: Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health Address: 2777 Speissegger Drive / Charleston, SC 29405 County of Residence: Charleston Phone #: 843-745-5149 Licensure/Certification: Philosophy of Therapy Modalities of Treatment Special Services Available Population Most Commonly Served Type of Payment Accepted Fees Determined Community Generally Served Is there a minority therapist available? As a counselor, I want to help you do what is best for your family, be it placing a child for adoption, becoming an adoptive parent or providing treatment for the child. I will work with you throughout the entire process so that you understand what may be going on inside of your child and family by offering ideas about issues that may arise along the way. It is often difficult to discuss adoption with relatives and friends who are close to you .A professional counselor is in position to be objective about these issues. I am specifically trained in child development, separation and loss, behavioral challenges, abuse/neglect, cultural issues, family relations and in the treatment of many mental health issues. Adoption related experiences and/or training in last 5 years … I have worked with adoptees and their families in an acute care hospital setting and also in child groups, adolescent groups, and in private practice. All members of the ‘adoption triangle” have thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are valid and need to be addressed. Please comment on the following: Beliefs about adoption and philosophy of practice with adoptees and/or their families – Adoption is a lifelong process. It comes with special needs and circumstances. Most children who are adopted have a different experience than birth children due to the mere fact that they have two sets of parents. Questions, emotional issues and frustrations can be a common experience for both children and parents alike. Adoption related experiences and/or training in last 5 years – The Director of our practice has almost fifteen years experience working in the field of adoption. This includes domestic, international, kinship and special needs.
