Prairieville Athens, Texas 75751 *********************************************** Textbook and required materials Textbook: Personal Finance by Jeff Madura, 2004 Second edition ISBN 0-321-16591-8 Course description: This course will include a study of the various aspects of personal money management. It will include invaluable information for an individual to maximize their income and investment potential. Topics include: setting financial goals, consumer credit, tax planning, insurance, investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, and retirement planning. Instructional methods: This course is offered as an integrated program of study utilizing a textbook, and online exchange of information. Each chapter in the textbook contains learning objectives, summary sections, financial planning problems, and online activities. As an independent course, the student will be required to read the textbook to ensure a complete understanding of the material presented. Assignments will be made for each chapter (attached). These will include problems at the conclusion of each chapter. The assignments will be due on the date of the corresponding test. The textbook provides countless web sites to enhance the learning experience. The instructor will be available to discuss problem areas. Emails will be checked daily, and responses will be prompt. Method of evaluation: There will be five examinations covering only the material assigned for that test. Each exam will have the same value. They will be based on the material covered in the textbook. The test will consist of true and false questions, multiple choice questions, and short discussion questions. Listing your examination grades. (5 grades) 2. Obtaining an average of your homework assignment grades. (1 grade) 3. Averaging these 6 grades to determine your course grade. Course Learning Outcomes The student will acquire an understanding of the following course learning outcomes: 1. an understanding of setting financial goals, 2. an understanding of personal financial statements, 3. an understanding of using consumer credit, 4. an understanding of tax planning, 5. an understanding of risk management and insurance, 6. an understanding of the fundamentals of investing, 7. an understanding of investing in stocks and bonds, 8. an understanding of investing in mutual funds, 9. an understanding of retirement planning, and 10.an understanding of estate planning. Assignments: Students will be required to turn in the answers to the assigned question from each chapter at the time of the corresponding examination. (Questions from chapters 1-4 will be due when Exam # 1 is taken, etc.., etc..) Grades: The course grade will be determined by using the following criteria; A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F = less than 60 EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES: Article summaries can be done. A maximum of 5 summaries can be done. Each of these summaries have the potential to add 2 points to your final average. The articles will need to be two pages in length. The summaries will come from columns written by Scot Burns in the Dallas Morning News. The summary will include how this information affects me, and how it relates to a topic in this course. The class will have a general orientation session on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5:30pm in room A-103 of the Gibbs Building on the Athens campus. If you cannot attend this session, please let me know. " Cut your auto insurance rates by one-third." This course cannot promise any of these. However, it can promise you the opportunity, along with your efforts, to achieve these and many other personal financial goals.
