									  WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF
RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
 IN TURKEY FOR THE LAST
      FIVE YEARS?

    Dr. Yasemin Gülbahar
        Dr. Ayfer Alper
                Introduction
 Each new research that will be conducted should
be based on relevant literature firstly.

 Especially in the field of educational technology,
review of up-to-date literature is more important
than other disciplines, since technology is the
phenomenon which shows a rapid change and
  evolution in recent years.

                                                   2
        Background of the Study
Research studies conducted up to now.

 the impact of a particular technology or software on student
  achievement and student motivation
 the effects of technology on student outcomes
 the impact of computer-assisted instruction on student outcomes
 documented the positive effects of educational technology on
  student achievement
 the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction (CAI)
 the effectiveness of interactive distance education
 the uses of educational technology in home and school

To achieve the best practices in the use of technology in teacher
education, more theory and evidence based research is needed !

                                                                       3
          Purpose of the Study
 … is to categorize and synthesize recent research studies
of the last five years, in order to shed light on future
studies that will be conducted in the field of educational
  technology in Turkey.

 For this reason, three major journals published by
Education Faculties, namely, “Ankara University Journal
of Faculty of Educational Sciences”, “Hacettepe
University Journal of Education” and “Gazi University
Journal of Faculty of Educational Sciences” was selected
  due to their respectability

         Research Questions
 What is the general overview of the research
  studies conducted?
 What is the overall aim of conducted research
studies in terms of topic, purpose, target
  population, number of variables and
  theoretical basis?
 What is the nature of research studies in terms
of sample selection method, sample size,
  research method, research type, data
  collection methods and used references?

                                                5
 Search and Selection Criteria
Search was limted to educational technology concepts, and selection
criteria was hardware, software, teachers, students and researchers
in the field. Hence, for this review, we used 11 search criteria which
were as follows:
  Topic
  Purpose
  Target Population
  Number of Variables (dependent-independent)
  Theoretical Basis
  Sample Selection Method
  Sample Size
  Research Method
  Research Type (qualitative-quantitative)
  Data Collection Methods
  Number of references (national-international

Overall Aim of Conducted Research
          Studies (topic)

The most popular topic studied in 23
 articles was computer aided instruction.
This broad term comprises applications of
 e-learning, web based instruction and
 internet based instruction which have
 different types like games, simulations,
 tutorials and interface design.

                                             8
Overall Aim of Conducted Research
   Studies (target population)
 Among 42 studies, 34 is research study whereas
8 was literature review. Of these 34 studies, 20
is conducted in K-12, where 14 is conducted in
  higher education.
 Pre-service teachers formed the sample of 13
studies whereas in-service teachers formed the
sample of 10 studies. Only one study selected
the sample from faculty members and the
sample of 10 studies were the students of K-12.

                                                     9
Overall Aim of Conducted Research
    Studies (theoretical basis)
When the theoretical basis of conducted research studies
is investigated, the following theories and concepts are
found to be used within at least two studies. Among 34
research studies, it was also found that seven studies did
 not include any theoretical basis.

  Computer Aided Instruction/E-Learning (8 studies)
 Social Learning Theory (7 studies)
 Constructivist Learning Theory (4 studies)
 Diffusion of Innovation Theory (3 studies)
 Mayer’s Generative Multimedia Learning Theory (2 studies)
  Game-based Learning (2 studies)

     Nature of Research Studies
        Conducted (sample)

As the sample selection method, 30
studies are found to be used “accessible
 sampling”, 3 used “convenience sampling”
 and 1 used “clustered sampling”.

Sample sizes are ranged from 14 to 730.

As the research type, 24 studies are based on
“quantitative” methods, 12 studies based on
“qualitative” methods, and the remaining 6
studies based on both “qualitative and
quantitative” methods.

             Conclusion

The narrow range of topics and theories
emerged from this study brings us to the
reality, why researchers give references to
international sources more than national
ones. The most important reason for this
finding is that developed countries are one
step further than Turkey most of the time.

      Future Recommendations
 Why the field of educational technology based on limited
  number of theories?
 What kind of actions should be considered to diffuse the
use of qualitative methods in the field?
 What should be done to transform the quality of
research in Turkey to the level of developed countries?
 How can the researcher studies in K-12 be improved?
 How researchers can be encouraged to carry out
  interdisciplinary studies?

                                                            17
