In an interview, David Opton, CEO of ExecuNet, talked about his motivation for starting ExecuNet and the career development industry. In 1988, he unexpectedly found himself in the job market following a corporate merger. Despite having more than twenty years of experience in Human Resources at the time, he was quickly stunned by the adversarial nature of the job search process and was convinced there had to be a better way for candidates and companies to connect. When conversations with peers revealed that these job search frustrations were not at all unique, he formed a local networking group to help facilitate the exchange of information, opportunities, and ideas. Despite the changes experienced during the past two decades, on balance he thinks the future looks promising. From his vantage point, it appears that the career development industry will continue to become more Web-based, as advancements in technology facilitate better communication and professionals become more comfortable with this delivery channel.
