Probably one of the most important skills that any candidate for a teaching position can have is good communication -- pointedly, the candidate must be able to sell him or herself in the cover letter for the application. It has become commonplace now for job announcements to ask applicants to show evidence of their understanding and use of educational technology. More important, however, there were also seven distinctive competencies that define superior performance of faculty as agents of educational change, including: 1. initiative, 2. adaptability, 3. persuasiveness, 4. persistence and stamina, 5. negotiating, 6. conceptualization, and 7. positive regard. Once you have the interview lined up, be prepared for the most common three parts of the process: the writing sample, the teaching demonstration, and the interview. Give the committee a sign of your fullest commitment to each and every student in your charge to meet him or her on an individual basis, a commitment to each individual student's success.
