Like many nephrology nurses in Canada, I have the great fortune of a lengthy and varied career in nephrology nursing, which began in 1982. The practice areas and opportunities in nephrology nursing are quite diverse, but very intricately connected to provide expert nursing care across a complex chronic illness continuum. Over my career, I have been afforded opportunities to practise in the areas of transplantation, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, pre-dialysis and the in-patient nephrology service. I have also been fortunate to observe nephrology nursing practice through many lenses in the roles of staff nurse, resource nurse, acting manager, provincial educator and, currently, as a nurse practitioner.
