In the real estate world, multifamily and commercial properties share a few basic similarities, including leasing a space to a client for a specific use and maintaining the property in an effort to retain current tenants and attract new ones. Excellent sales skills, knowledge of the product, knowing how and what to negotiate, and attention to customer service are also prerequisites for both aspects of the industry. But there are some major differences, and the author found she needed to get up to speed quickly. Customer service is critical to the manager-tenant relationship in both industries, as is understanding how to handle people in a variety of situations. The industry-specific nomenclature and the multitude of various service lines within real estate are unlike anything I have ever experienced.
