Christ, community outreach director for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, helped organize those conferences, and he edits this volume, his third anthology devoted to this period in Arkansas history. Other high points include groundbreaking investigations of Confederate military medicine by Cynthia DeHaven Pitcock and Bill Gurley Tom Wing's look at how the latter part of the war affected Fort Smith and Indian Territory, and Daniel Sutherland's analysis explaining why Confederate guerrilla warfare deteriorated into savage outlawry.
