There are three reasons why Google has become synonymous with search. First, there's timing. Second, Google worked. Third, and most important for the author, is the fact that there hasn't been an engine that has come out that beats it. When it comes to new engines, the authors advice is to be unlike the media outlets that tend to jump on the next big thing without even trying it out. Librarians know better than that. Maybe that is where they will succeed, by not pushing Google "competitors" that have no business being involved in search.
