The failure and FDIC takeover of California-based IndyMac brought some negative consequences to the Texas banking industry. Although Texas banks are well capitalized and healthy, it has been receiving an increasing number of media inquiries about their safety and soundness. Since local news media prefer to interview experts in their own communities, the author felt it was necessary to arm their bankers with information that would be beneficial in the event they were interviewed by their local news media. The media kit, "Promoting the Pillars of the Community," was designed to help bankers promote their banks and establish relationships with reporters in their communities. The importance of working with the news media was never more evident than in IndyMac's failure.
