After four consecutive years of eased underwriting standards, the majority of the banks surveyed by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) have tightened underwriting standards for both commercial and retail property loans. Only 6% of the surveyed banks eased commercial standards, down significantly from 36% in 2007. Meanwhile, 52% of banks tightened commercial lending standards, up from 16% the year before; while 42% of banks were unchanged in 2008, down from 58% in 2007, according to the OCC.
