A consolidation among U.S. grocery retailers and rising production and distribution costs may lead to the combination of some U.S. foodmakers in the next few years, and Campbell and Heinz may be two of them, said Mariann Montagne, an analyst with Thrivent Asset Management in Minneapolis. The maker of Smart Ones and Weight Watchers frozen meals benefited as consumers purchased more at grocery stores and ate out at restaurants less because of higher fuel costs, lower home values and further U.S. job losses.
