Earlier this summer, FM Global decided to do something few companies would ever consider a good operational strategy: Give away its database of proprietary data. The company's underlying belief has largely been that if construction materials and other mitigation techniques could just be tested enough in real-world extreme scenarios, the design flaws could be overcome and stronger prevention safeguards could be built. Until now, such data was available only to FM Global clients, but with more and more governments, companies and other organizations throughout the world looking for proven means to manage these risks, the company decided that everyone could benefit from its rigorously tested data sets.
