At fire training schools, "defensive firefighting tactics" should be taught to firefighters, along with aggressive firefighting tactics. Many years ago, before the introduction of the aerial platform, the FDNY's firefighting tactics were evaluated. The department was found to be very effective in stretching smalldiameter hoselines for aggressive interior firefighting, but less effective in setting up large-caliber master streams for defensive exterior firefighting.
