[...] since my trade is that of storyteller, and since a lot of what I do consists of thinking myself into the minds of imaginary people who are quite unlike me, it would be foolish to limit myself to the worldview of any organization such as a political party, even the most sympathetic, or to refrain from imagining things that this or that group didn't believe in, or to check my every sentence against a sort of mental template of what's approved and what isn't. Heaven also represents a sense of connection with others both living and dead, with our friends and families and lovers as well as those ghosts I spoke about earlier, honored citizens of the republic of heaven; we show our regard for them, our fellowship with them, when we celebrate their memory.
