The economy is tight, jobs are tighter, and no one understands why the information center has such a big budget for online services. There is a lesson for any profession facing profound challenges in the form of new technology. Information professionals' job is not to run a library or to manage information services -- it is to help their clients make better decisions, whether those clients are CEOs, professors, engineers, lawyers, students, or whoever. How they accomplish that is their problem; what they care about is getting the best information possible in the most usable format.
