The Congress party has traditionally won the vote of the Dalits in India and they can see this slipping away to the BSP under Dalit leadership; and Congress, having only 145 seats out of 545 in the Lower House of Parliament, depend for their majority in the national parliament upon coalition support from the communists and the BSP.
