A new study by the National Research Council finds that major barriers remain in the development of a hydrogen fuel car, but says the potential to reduce oil dependence and harmful emissions justifies the cost of the research. In addition to finding better ways to make, manage, and use hydrogen, the program seeks to reduce vehicle weight and cost while it improves fuel efficiency. FreedomCAR is pursuing promising new materials and designs for membranes and membrane-electrode assemblies. FreedomCAR is researching lower-cost lithium-ion materials and manufacturing methods.
