Succession planning for the C-suite does not exist in a majority of organizations. As a result, talented midlevel executives are left with considerable uncertainty about their opportunities for continued professional advancement. It is very natural to want to move up into a C-suite role. To position yourself as the candidate of choice the next time a position opens up, you should understand the organization's business and politics. You should understand your own strengths and weaknesses. And you absolutely should play a very active role in the long-term succession planning and candidate grooming process. Ask for a thorough annual or semiannual evaluation relative to your capabilities, experiences and acumen from cross-functional leaders.
