Learn to make and play African Marimbas
with Russell Matthews, from Golden Bay, Nelson New Zealand.
These are unique chances to learn from a master; Russell leads the Marimba group Mweya,
who performed at WOMAD 2005, Taranaki, New Zealand. The workshop is targeted towards
''Marimbas in Schools" a project where the technology and music teachers can combine to
provide marimbas to children.
Come and learn to make, and play these exciting communal playing instruments. On this
workshop, you'll learn how, and participate in, making a marimba, and learn to play simple
rhythms. You will end the course with a comprehensive manual on building a marimba, and
the experience in making and tuning one.
Course Outline and format
The courses run over 3 days, a Friday night, the Saturday and Sunday. Friday night is for
some fun, introductions to marimbas, the music behind them, and each other. We'll get to
play some this night. Saturday and Sunday, we'll be making up the marimbas, keys,
resonators, mallets and frames. By Sunday night, four marimbas will be ready to leave the
workshop for a new home!
The marimbas are made of dried, untreated dressed pine, and produce a wonderful sound.
The material will be precut in most cases, like a kitset. Each of the marimbas produced will be
destined for a school of choice by the class. The school will be expected to contribute $300
towards the marimba, not bad for an instrument worth up to, and over $1000!!!
This workshop is supported by the NZ Rhythm centre, who have an active keen marimba
playing group. See http://www.rhythmcentre.org/
There are two separate courses available, which run on a Friday night, then all day Saturday
and Sunday

NZ On Air new contestable fund, the Digital Content Partnership Fund
The fund will support programmes involving the use of new media and is part of NZ On Air's
new digital strategy as it prepares for changes to the Broadcasting Act.
The fund will exist for four years, with $1million set aside each year and submissions sought
annually. The first application deadline is in March 2008.
The preference for the first year is for projects targeting New Zealand children or youth.
Amendments to the Broadcasting Act are intended to allow funding of online and other digital
content. The Act currently requires a 'broadcast outcome', says Ms Wrightson. This means
that successful projects for the first year's allocation, at least, must still air on a New Zealand
television or radio station. But the fund will also allow reversioning and streaming on online
and mobile platforms. A nationwide networked or syndicated outcome is desirable so as many
people as possible can access it.
The content must be available free to the audience on at least one platform, but some form of
subscription or cost-recovery on another may also be permitted.
We've kept the criteria very broad to encourage the most innovative ideas to surface
