                                                                                 tober 2009

Dear Parents / Guardians,

As we move into the Liturgical season of Advent we prepare for the coming of Christ
into our lives in the celebration of Christmas. It is our wish that each of you will find
time during the busy Christmas rush to take time and reflect with your families on the
incredible birth story of Jesus. There is always so much to do this time of year that we
lose sight of what is important during the season of advent and forget to prepare
ourselves spiritually for this occasion.

The following prayer can be used with your family during the advent season as another
means to prepare for the coming of Christ.

Jesus, You are the light of the world,
Teach us how to live in your light
May the darkness of sin never touch our lives
We ask these things in the name of Jesus, Your Son
Light of the World, Prince of Peace.

We will be hosting an Advent celebration at St. Helena School on Wednesday
December 23th at 10:15 a.m. all parents are invited to attend as our school community
completes it’s final preparations to celebrate the birth of Christ.

In addition to our school liturgy the school community will be participating in two
charity activities in the hopes of bringing joy to individuals and families that may be in
need. All students, staff and community members did a wonderful job in collecting non-
perishable food items to the St. Vincent De Paul food Drive. Students will also be able
to purchase candy canes and paper light bulbs. The proceeds from this activity will be
given to Avenue 15 to help trouble teens who are in need of additional support.
On behalf of all the staff and community members at St. Helena we would like to extend
to you our best wishes for a wonderful and restful Christmas season. We look forward
to working closely with you in the New Year.

May God bless you and your families through the season of Advent.

We have made a few changes to the honor roll and the strong tradition of celebrating
academics and effort. The Honor roll will consist of students who have been able to
maintain and average of 80% in all subjects with no mark below 70% and no effort rating
less than NI. We will also be celebrating those students that who achieve an excellence in
effort throughout the reporting period in all subject areas. On December 11th, we will be
celebrating student achievement with a special honor lunch. You will receive an
invitation if your child will be recognized at this event.

Eboard is an easy to use online service that will allow parents and students to access
homework assignments and important dates in their subject areas. Eboard acts as a
backup to the student’s agenda to confirm assignments and due dates and allow parents a
quick and easy way to monitor academic programs. St. Helena is extremely happy to
offer this service.

There are two ways to access the eboard website:

   1) Go to
   2) On the left hand side of the screen you will see a blank field.
   3) Type in “Helena” and click go
   4) You will be prompted for a read only password

               PASSWORD: Helena

The second way is to access our new website and
follow the link to the eboard website. We are still working on the website but this link
does work. Once at the eboard website follow the instructions above to gain access to the
St. Helena Eboard page.

Our teachers all have there own posted board and by clicking on the classroom tab you
will be able to access your child’s teacher and subject areas. If you do not know who
teachers your child a particular subject please do not hesitate to give us a call.

As it becomes a bigger issue in schools Cyberbullying and websites such as Nexopia and
chat rooms such as MSN are becoming a growing concern for all schools. Please make
every effort to monitor your child’s computer use and help to eliminate this problem in
our school community. If you become the subject of inappropriate comments save and
print any information and report it to the police. Schools do play a role in supporting our
students outside of the classroom in this regard as they are here during the day but it is
ultimately a partnership with parents to protect and keep our students safe. If you have
any question regarding this please give us a call. The following websites can provide
support to counteract bullying and cyber bullying if it is occurring.

The care and safety of children entrusted in our care is a priority of the Calgary Catholic
School District. Recently, a number of incidents across the District were reported where
students were victims of bullying while at school. This type of behavior that puts our
students’ safety at risk is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at our schools.
Disciplinary action has been taken with the perpetrators and we will continue to monitor
the situation at the schools.

At the District, we take bullying very seriously and are eager to work with both students
and their parents to eradicate it from our schools. We cannot effectively educate our
children in schools where violence and bullying may affect students’ safety. For students
to learn well, their schools must be disciplined and feel safe.

We believe that under no circumstances should any child ever feel that their physical
safety and emotional well being is compromised at any time and under any
circumstances. In an effort to create safe and caring schools, the Calgary Catholic School
District operates our Community of Caring initiative in all schools. The Catholic
Community of Caring initiative is based on the values of faith, family, caring,
responsibility, respect and trust. As part of this initiative, our schools proactively create
and maintain a safe and caring environment for all students. As a Catholic community,
we need to work together as administration, parents and students to ensure our school
environments are safe and reflective of our Catholic values.

If you, as a parent, have any concerns with your child’s safety or potential bullying or
violence against your child, please discuss this immediately with school administration.

If you have an appointment at the school please use the visitor parking
stalls in our parking lot. We are also requesting that you do not drop
students off in the parking lot but rather use the lane on the south side of
Sir John A. MacDonald field. Safety is our main concern and or parking
lot is a very busy area as we have busses, deliveries staff and visitors arriving throughout
the morning. If you must use the parking lot as a drop off area we would like to
implement a one way system of use so that all traffic moves in the same direction. We
would like to see all traffic go East (toward Deerfoot) and around the front of the lot and
out. Please do not turn left into the parking lot as it becomes too congested. Your
cooperation ion this matter is appreciated.

As the weather turns cold we are requesting that you remind your children to dress
appropriately for the weather. Gloves hats and warm footwear are essential in making
sure that are students are safe as they make their way to and from school. We will be
following district guidelines (-17 or colder) and keep students inside during extreme
conditions. If students need to come inside to meet with teachers for extra help in the
morning or at lunch they will be required to make an appointment with their teacher.

We will be preparing for the Christmas holidays be initiating a number of fundraising
events in the next couple of weeks. All proceeds will go towards Avenue 15, a homeless
shelter for teenagers. Thank you for your support and generosity.

I would like to extend a thank you to Mrs. Ellis for taking a lead on these two initiatives,
your hard work is a wonderful example for us all to follow.
