Abstract:

Every patient has postoperative pain after any surgigal operation. The consequence of insufficient
postoperative pain-relieving can lead to be chronic. That is why postoperative pain has to be
assessed regularly and nurses should to trust the assessment of pain made by the patient.

The thesis was a subproject of the project By Booking Towards Painless carried out in KUH. The aim
of the project was to develop the care of postoperative pain. During the project two surveys for the
nursing staff were carried out. The first survey was made by the developing group of the operative
line in October 2003. In connection with the subproject the second survey was renewed in November
2004 by using the same questionnary. The data was analysed and the results of the first and the
second survey were compared with each other.

The main aim of this thesis was to study whether the staff’s concepts of taking care of pain have
changed in the area of responsibility for the operative line in Kuopio University Hospital (KUH). The
research was carried out by studying if the use of pain measurements has increased and become
unified and how versatile the methods to assess paint were made by the nursing staff.

The results showed that the nursing staff’s concepts of taking care of pain have changed for the
better. In spite of education of taking care of pain the staff thought that they would need more
knowledge of taking care of pain, for example of painkillers. In the renewed survey the verbal and the
numeral rating of pain scale were discerned as the mist current and most wellknown pain
measurements. According to the nurses patients were satisfied with postoperative care of pain.

Further studies are needed to research if the change taking care of pain has stayed permament. For
developing to take care of pain it should be useful to explore the patients’ viewpoint from the
realization and qualitation of taking care of pain. The results of patients’ viewpoint could be
compared with the concepts of nursing staff.
