Abstract: Every patient has postoperative pain after any surgigal operation. The consequence of insufficient postoperative pain-relieving can lead to be chronic. That is why postoperative pain has to be assessed regularly and nurses should to trust the assessment of pain made by the patient. The thesis was a subproject of the project By Booking Towards Painless carried out in KUH. The aim of the project was to develop the care of postoperative pain. During the project two surveys for the nursing staff were carried out. The first survey was made by the developing group of the operative line in October 2003. In connection with the subproject the second survey was renewed in November 2004 by using the same questionnary. The data was analysed and the results of the first and the second survey were compared with each other. The main aim of this thesis was to study whether the staff’s concepts of taking care of pain have changed in the area of responsibility for the operative line in Kuopio University Hospital (KUH). The research was carried out by studying if the use of pain measurements has increased and become unified and how versatile the methods to assess paint were made by the nursing staff. The results showed that the nursing staff’s concepts of taking care of pain have changed for the better. In spite of education of taking care of pain the staff thought that they would need more knowledge of taking care of pain, for example of painkillers. In the renewed survey the verbal and the numeral rating of pain scale were discerned as the mist current and most wellknown pain measurements. According to the nurses patients were satisfied with postoperative care of pain. Further studies are needed to research if the change taking care of pain has stayed permament. For developing to take care of pain it should be useful to explore the patients’ viewpoint from the realization and qualitation of taking care of pain.
