      What is a Resume?
 The resume is a tool with one specific
purpose: to win an interview. A resume is
 an advertisement, nothing more, nothing
    less. Think of it as: “If you buy this
product, you will get these specific, direct
                 benefits.”

Who is Reading Your Resume?
• The average job
  opening gets up to
  100 resumes
• Assume the person
  looking at your
  resume has less than
  3 minutes to review it;
  you need to grab their
  attention in less than
  20 seconds
• Attract the
  “Skimmers”
What Does This Mean?
                  DO
• Have a friend review your resume for
  spelling and grammatical errors
• Customize your resume to each job—an
  employer can tell if you send them a
  generic resume
• Format the resume to be simple and
  pleasing to the eye
                    DON’T
•   Use jargon or buzz words
•   Use elaborate stationery
•   Put the word “Resume” on a resume
•   Rely on spell check to find mistakes!!
•   Lie or exaggerate skills or role
•   Forget about unintended consequences:
    – “Googling”
    – Neutral email address
    – Voice mail
