DAYTIME EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS
1. When a chemical spill occurs in a room, all occupants of that room should leave and shut the door. Report
the chemical spill to the Security Office at (902) 420-5000 and to one of the Technicians of your
department.
2. Before attempting to clean up the spill the Technician, as necessary, will report the spill to your supervisor
and then to the departmental chairperson, the Occupational Health and Safety Program Manager, and the
Dean of Science.
3. If the spill is small and does not require evacuation of more the one room, after reporting as specified in #2
the spill should be cleaned up under supervision, using the proper spill kit and personal protective
equipment. Bulk Acid, Caustic and Solvent spill kits are available through the Department of Biology and
the Department of Chemistry Technicians.
4. If there is a fire or a health hazard that is deemed to be extremely high, then the fire department should be
summoned directly by pulling the fire alarm and the building should be evacuated. The Security Office will
manage the evacuation of the building.
5. In the case of serious spills the Technician, while in communication with the supervisor or chairperson, will
evaluate the spill. Saint Mary’s University has a contingency plan with Clean Harbours to act as our
primary respondent at our request in the event of a serious spill.
6. If the individuals indicate in #2 above, are not available or if any doubt exists as to the nature of the spill,
then call Clean Harbours at 1-800-645-8265 (24 hour response) OR 1-(902)-897-0267.
