PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES:
The most likely emergencies to strike the Sioux City Stake are severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding,
severe storms, terrorist attack, loss of power, and fuel shortage.
Members are first encouraged to take direction from civil authorities during any emergency.
Ward Welfare Committees will review and report annually to the high councilor assigned to the
ward/branch progress toward encouraging members to acquire a year’s supply of food, clothing, and fuel
and to prepare for the expected emergencies through:
Sacrament meeting talks under the direction of the bishop.
Melchizadek Priesthood quorum emphasis during lessons and home teaching.
Relief Society lessons and Enrichment meetings and activities.
Young Men emphasis during scouts, activities, and lessons
Young Women emphasis during activities, lessons, and camp.
Ward dry pack canning trips
Group buys with the stake Preparedness specialist.
Annual Reports will be due in September each year and may vary in content. Areas include:
14 day supply of water
72 hour kits
1 month of food
6 months of food
1 year of food
Ward welfare committees should also review, update, and report to the high councilor at least annually:
The accuracy of the ward address list, phone list, cell phone list, and map of all member homes.
Who has been assigned to assist each family who may not be able to care for themselves.
Those in the ward with special skills or equipment who could be helpful in an emergency.
The method of communication to be used in the ward and to the stake if telephones are out.
The approach used to inform less active members of plans in the ward to respond to an emergency.
The Stake welfare committee will review annually:
Ward plans based on reports from high councilors.
Annual reports from the wards/branches.
Methods for communication with the wards and with the chairman of the regional welfare
committee through the regional communications specialist Brother Sorensen
if telephones are not working.
Methods for communication with the bishop’s storehouse 402-891-1577 if telephones are not
working.

Resources in the stake to prevent and relieve emotional trauma.
RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES:
After ensuring that family members are able to care for themselves, the Stake Welfare Committee and a
representative from each ward and branch are to convene at the chapel or alternatively the Stake
President’s home and should meet to:
Determine an initial course of action based on direction from civil authoritites
Collect assessments of the condition of the families in the Wards and Branches
Make sure that key priesthood leaders are available to administer to the people
Focus on physical arrangements that might be needed
Set up a time and method for follow up communications
Make contact with the regional representatives
Make contact with the bishop’s storehouse

Priority action in an emergency should be:
1. Assist those who are injured or in danger.
2. Account for families, assisting them to reunite as soon as possible.
3. Inform the chairman of the regional welfare committee of conditions in the stake and request
assistance as needed. If the chairman of the regional welfare committee is unavailable, contact
should be made with the Area Presidency or Church Headquarters .
4. Arrange for shelter and other selected services-keeping people as close to their property as
possible in the homes of relatives, friends, and neighbors before sending them to public shelters or
establishing a shelter in the church meetinghouse.
5. Assess damage to church property and take steps to protect it as necessary.
6. Review damage to homes and determine ways neighbors can assist one another.
7. If necessary establish a shelter using the following information as a guide. A church
meetinghouse may be used as an emergency shelter with the approval from the Area Presidency
as needed. Care should be taken to ensure appropriate control of the building by priesthood
leaders.
