Recent cosmetic applications in Turkey, such as the new „Fiery‟ perfume range from
Akat Cosmetics, demonstrate the growing global appeal of elegant and functional
Surlyn® moulding resin from DuPont. Having previously used aluminium or
polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for the perfume cap, Akat chose Surlyn® PC 2000
on the basis of the material‟s glass-like transparency and appealing surface-feel,
combined with essential performance in terms of chemical and impact resistance.

DuPont™ Surlyn® strengthens its position in the
Turkish cosmetic industry
Stevenage, May 2006. Recent cosmetic applications in Turkey demonstrate the
growing global appeal of elegant and functional Surlyn® moulding resin from
DuPont. Selected on the basis of the material‟s transparency combined with functional
properties such as chemical and impact resistance, Akat Cosmetics uses Surlyn® for
the caps of its „Fiery‟ perfume line. Similar criteria have resulted in a further Turkish
company, Erkul Cosmetics, choosing the high-performance polymer from DuPont for
the caps of its new perfume line „Golden Rose‟.
It was as Akat Cosmetics – established in Istanbul in 1970 – were looking to
reinvigorate its „Fiery‟ perfume line, that the company chose Surlyn® PC 2000 as the
new material for its cap. Having previously used aluminium or polymethyl
methacrylate (PMMA) for the application, the Akat‟s marketing team recognised that
“Surlyn® was becoming the industry-choice for premium European perfumes”. A
reputation that Akat soon found to be well-deserved: Upon comparison with
alternatives such as aluminium, PMMA or polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Surlyn®
convinced Akat on the basis of its glass-like transparency and appealing surface-feel,
combined with essential performance in terms of chemical and impact resistance. The
material‟s ease of processing, enabling production of the thick-walled caps in a single
injection-moulding operation, is a further benefit of Surlyn® which has given rise to
its popularity in cosmetic applications. Colour adherence of the cap with the bottle is
achieved with the use of a masterbatch. “We have been greatly impressed by the
aesthetics and performance of Surlyn®. The overall appeal of our packaging, which
incorporates a butterfly theme, is maintained by the attractiveness of the Surlyn® cap,”
comments Adnan Akat, owner of Akat Cosmetics.
Meanwhile, Erkul Cosmetics uses Surlyn® PC 100 moulding resin, a grade of
Surlyn® which is able to achieve high levels of optical clarity, for the caps of its
„Golden Rose‟ perfume. Representing a new line for the company, the in-house
packaging production team sought a material able to replicate the colour and
transparency of the packaged product.
“These latest applications in Turkey confirm the global appeal of Surlyn® for
cosmetic applications, particularly around the theme of perfect transparency without
sacrifices in performance,” states Nilgun Turan, business development manager in the
country for DuPont Cosmetics Solutions. “Beyond our value-adding materials, key
strengths of the DuPont offering include our consulting and technical expertise gained
from a cutting-edge, global role in providing cosmetic solutions – all of considerable
benefit to a developing cosmetic industry such as the one in Turkey,” she adds.
