The SymbianOne Monitor - A bi-weekly recap of wireless technologies and news affecting the Symbian OS and Symbian smartphone user
The Symbian Ecosystem 2005 Year In Review (Part 1) 2005 was a huge year for the Symbian OS. Most notably, we welcomed the release of Symbian OS v9 as well as series 60 3rd edition.. New devices were plentiful including the long awaited N-Series and E-series of devices as well as the Nokia 7710 and popular 6680. As reported by Symbian Ltd., Q1 2005 shipments of phones based on Symbian OS totalled 6.75m translating to year on year growth of more than 180%. Read on for our recap of interesting and newsworthy Symbian OS developments from 2005. Logging a few travel miles in 2005, the SymbianOne team made stops in Helsinki, London, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Vancouver this past year... ENJOY! PArt @ still in the works.. stay tuned! Where Is My All You Can Eat GPRS Plan - Until then, is text messaging the killer App? - Paying by the KB for data services will restrict the uptake of some amazing applications and services, additionally, smartphone features will go un-used and powerful, new devices will sit on the shelves until a suitable option like “All you can eat GPRS” or perhaps a 100MB monthly data plan (sub $30 please!) comes to the market. Mind-you, should free Wi-Fi hotspots proliferate, WiFi enabled devices like the Nokia Nseries, Eseries, 9300i, or SE 990 might in-fact be the solution. Have you visited the SymbianOne Symbian Freeware Repository Yet? More than 70 applications are now listed and it continues to grow. Did we miss something? Please tell us -- Looking to purchase a new smartphone? Thanks to our partnership with GBT Mobile, you can now browse and purchase the latest Symbian devices or accessories from our Device Shoppe.
