March 16, 2008  Palm Sunday “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.” – Mt 21:9-11 SAINT PETER’S & SAINT PAUL’S NEWS Liturgy Intentions 8:15 am SPA Word/Communion 8:15 am SPE Word/Communion Tues, Mar 18 8:15 am SPE O’Malley & Spaniol Families 5:30 pm SPE Adoration (all welcome) Wed, Mar 19 8:15 am SPA Wanda Nikle 12:00 pm SPA Stations of the Cross Mon, Mar 17 2 From Fr. Alan WELCOME TO HOLY WEEK, a week like no other on the Christian calendar. Today we begin our journey to Calvary first waving palms and singing Hosannas….the second part of our Palm Sunday liturgy has a somber mood as we focus ourselves on the Passion of Jesus. The heart and center of Holy Week is the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday as we set aside time to gather with the Christian community to commemorate the Lord’s Last Supper, His death on the cross, and then usher in the fifty day season of Easter as we “keep vigil the Lord’s resurrection” and welcome new members into the Church. The Holy Saturday Easter Vigil is the first of our Easter Masses, please note there is no 4:30 Mass on Holy Saturday. May you and your families truly have a meaningful and holy week of remembrance and renewal. And a word of THANKS to all who are helping us experience the beauty of these liturgies by putting so much time and energy into planning and leading us through these days: our liturgy directors and worship committees, choirs, music ministers, decorators, all the liturgical ministers, and also those who are taking Communion to the sick and homebound and helping them to be included in our celebration of Holy Week and Easter. The entire community of St. Paul’s is enhanced when we utilize our members varied gifts and talents. The FIRST step begins at our March 29-30 Liturgies. Parishioners will be asked to submit the names of registered parishioners they feel have the gifts needed to serve our parish community as a member of the Pastoral Council. At this time, you don’t need to be concerned with whether the person would be interested in serving. Parishioners may also contact the Parish Office from March 31 through April 4 to nominate someone. All nominations will be kept anonymous. SECOND. Those parishioners nominated will be contacted and invited to attend an Evening of Discernment on April 24. The evening will include learning more about the council, informal sharing, prayer and recognition of each person’s individual gifts. At the end of the evening, nominees will indicate if they are willing to serve. THIRD. During the weekend Liturgy on Pentecost (May 11), three adult names and one youth name will be drawn by lot from the pool of nominees. The three adult parishioners will then serve on the Pastoral Council for three years, youth for one year. Please contact any Pastoral Council member with any questions you might have. Fr. Pro-Life Message: “The cloak of silence surrounding abortion has left couples...struggling alone to understand and respond to relationship challenges in the aftermath of an abortion. An essential first step toward change is open acknowledgment of the dark potential of abortion to disrupt individuals’ lives and wreak havoc on intimate bonds.” Priscilla K. WANTED: Jesus Needs Your Help: We have a gentleman who lives in a Group Home on 23rd Ave North who would like a ride to Mass (either parish) every other weekend. CHURCH OF ST. PETER – ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA 4 Faith Formation & More FAITH FORMATION—There are NO FAITH FORMATION CLASSES next week so families can enter into the mystery of Holy Week. Please join with other members of our faith community in a spirit of prayer and preparation for the celebration of Easter. As we journey through this final week of Lent into the Triduum, we are once more invited to join our lives to the Paschal Mystery of Christ. This week really encourages us to reflect on the true cost of discipleship. I wonder if Peter, James, John, and the rest of the Apostles had any idea what discipleship would entail when they began their apprenticeship with Jesus. They left family, jobs, and homes to follow this new teacher who invited them to “Come and see” [Jn1:39ff]. Almost immediately they announced to their friends, “We have found the Messiah!” What good Jewish person wouldn't have been excited and ready to join him? What they learned over their years together is that bringing about the Reign of God takes patience, a thick skin, perseverance, quick thinking, prayer, reflection, and more. Had they anticipated the pain, fear, isolation and even persecution they would endure as a disciple of Jesus Christ, I wonder if they would have been so quick to sign on. Yet, we know that as faithful disciples, they trusted Jesus and weathered the storms to find their ‘hearts burning within” them and their tongues unable to be silenced after the resurrection and the ascension of Christ. They were so deeply in love with God and so passionate about their mission, they were unstoppable. There are many people who have modeled this kind of discipleship for us over the years. Among them is Mother Teresa. As a young woman, she responded to a call from Jesus Christ to go to India to care for the little ones—the poor, the ill, the outcasts. According to her own writing, she had a mystical experience in which Jesus told her he wanted her to be his presence in this broken and hurting part of the world. The rest is history—the world watched as she lovingly tended to the needs of the many who suffered deeply. She became the voice of Christ to the world today as she taught us about the power of God’s love. We can look to our brothers and sisters in Kenya to see discipleship being lived in spite of danger. We see the face of Christ today in those who help in our local soup kitchens and those who tend shut-ins in our community. As we enter into this most Holy Week, I invite you to reflect on the ways you are being called to be bread broken for others, on the feet you wash, on the cross you are asked to carry – the moments of total surrender to God. May we consider the cost of true discipleship and pray for the courage to walk in the footsteps of the saints as we continue to build the Reign of God. Wishing you all a week filled with prayer, silence, faith, and peace leading to the joy of Resurrection anew! Linda Arnold Sacramental Preparation for First Eucharist: The next meeting for students, and their parents, who plan to receive this sacrament in the spring is March 26th at 6:30PM and we’ll be meeting at Saint Paul’s. PETER St. Peter’s Parish Council Nominations It is time for our parish community to nominate fellow St. Peter’s parishioners to serve in the leadership role of St. Peter’s Pastoral Council members. Please prayerfully consider parishioners who could use their gifts and talents to serve us. There are three council positions that will be filled. The first step in filling the positions begins the weekend of March 29 and 30 during the St. Peter’s liturgies. Parishioners will be asked to submit names of registered parishioners they feel have the gifts needed to serve our parish community as a member of the Pastoral Council. At that time, one doesn’t need to be concerned whether the person would be interested in serving, and one may submit one’s own name. Parishioners may also contact the parish office from March 31 to April 4 to nominate someone. All nominations will be kept anonymous. In the second step, those parishioners nominated will be contacted and invited to attend an Evening of Discernment on Tuesday, April 22. The evening will include prayer, learning more about the council, and informal sharing. At the end of the evening, nominees present will indicate if they are willing to be in the final pool of nominees. The third and final step will occur during the weekend Liturgy on Pentecost, May 11. Father Alan will draw three names by lot from the pool of nominees and announce the names to the parish community. The three parishioners will then serve on the Pastoral Council for three years. Please contact any Pastoral Council member with questions you might have. Fr. PAUL The Triduum At Home: Preparing the Passover 5 On Holy Thursday evening, Lent ends and the Three Days of the Paschal begin, our Passover, our Easter. Lenten fasting ends on Holy Thursday, but on Good Friday and Holy Saturday we are asked to keep the Easter Fast. This is the fast not of sorrow but of excitement, not of repentance, but of anticipation. Choose simple foods with deep meaning for Easter Fast and Easter Feast; the unleaven bread of affliction and the yeastraised bread of life, bitter herbs and green herbs, rainbow eggs and paschal lamb, the milk and honey of the Promised land. Place a large candle in a bowl of water on the dining room table as a remembrance of the shining bath of Baptism. Holy Thursday We begin our celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper During this liturgy, our community receives the holy oils blessed by Bishop John Kinney at the Chrism Mass. We also recall the service of love that Jesus exemplified in the washing of the feet. Following the liturgy, there will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Community Room until 10:00 PM. Baskets to accept your Rice Bowl Lenten sacrifice will be in all lobbies. Good Friday Services We celebrate the Lord’s Passion, venerate the Wood of the Cross, and share in communion during the 1:00 pm service. The 7:00 PM service will include the scriptural stations and veneration of the wood. The service will be in darkness and will offer times for quiet reflection. Baskets to accept donations for the Shrines of the Holy Land will be in all lobbies. Holy Saturday Vigil We solemnize with great devotion the celebration of this most holy night when the world was redeemed. Death was vanquished, life became victorious. We light and bless the fire; we chant the beautiful “Exsultet”; we light candles and process in the “Light of Christ”; we remember and retell the stories of Redemption; we see those who thirst for God; at St. Paul’s we welcome Marj Hawkins and Josie Carlson, who will be received into Full Communion with the Catholic Church, and we sing our Easter Alleluia! Remain with us for an Easter Reception following the Mass of Resurrection. Easter Sunday The liturgies call us to hear again the sacred message of reconciliation, forgiveness, peace and the invitation to believe. We find the Risen Lord visible in the midst of our assembly. Choirs, resounding brass, chiming bells and vibrant banners enliven our worship. The H2O project our parish is participating in has taken off with leaps and bounds as we help to quench the thirst of many in Kenya. We have already collected $204! We would like to challenge and extend an invitation to you to continue your contributions through the month of April by dropping your spare change in the FINKEN water jugs in the East entrance. Feel free to fill it to the top and we will make another one available! St. Paul’s Holy Week Altar Server Training March 20—Holy Thursday—1:00 PM March 21—Good Friday—10:00 AM March 22—Holy Saturday—1:00 PM CHURCH OF ST. PAUL – ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA A Three Day Retreat Allow yourself a three-day retreat this week. Start with Holy Thursday Eucharist; then take Good Friday off of work (your spirit deserves the break). Then decide to do some of the following ideas (but not all of them!): Turn off your cell phone and computer. Cover your television screen with a beautiful fabric...place a cross in front of it. Take a walk. Sit by the Mississippi. Listen for the church bells each hour and say a prayer as they ring...allow them to call you back to the center of life throughout these days Count your blessings. Seek forgiveness from those you have hurt. Be gentle with yourself. Let go of your guilt knowing that God has forgiven you. Look into the eyes of those you love...and let them know you love them. Read the Passion. Open a window in your home and let the fresh springtime air in. Come to church and worship with your faith community. ‘Write a love letter. Decorate eggs with your children. Make some popcorn. Spend individual time with each member of your family. Pray the rosary. Walk the Stations of the Cross. Place a blossoming plant on your kitchen counter. Listen to the birds. Sweep the winter sand off your sidewalk...and your neighbor’s sidewalk! Light a candle each evening. Watch the sunrise and sunset. 6 Liturgy News Eucharistic Ministers—We are in need of volunteers for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter. There is a sign up sheet in the Sacristy.
