Res. 1216”, which proposes reduction of child-radiation dosing “This disruptive EOS technology, invented by a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, is designed to dramatically reduce radiation doses for both children and adults while providing extremely accurate images for clinical diagnosis.” Gordon D. Donald, III, MD, New Jersey Spine Group, LLC ATLANTA & EATONTOWN, N.J. (Business Wire EON) June 11, 2008 -- ATLANTA & EATONTOWN, N.J. (Business Wire EON) June 11, 2008 -- biospace med, an emerging medical technology company based in Atlanta, announced today that Eatontown, NJ-based New Jersey Spine Group, LLC, is the first healthcare facility in the United States to install the Company's FDA-cleared 'EOS' x-ray imager—the world's first ultra-low-dose x-ray technology. The first EOS installation at a U.S. healthcare facility comes on the heels of a resolution introduced earlier this month in the U.S. House of Representatives, "H. Res. 1216", which proposes to reduce radiation dosages used in the imaging of children. EOS can capture head-to-toe images of patients in a standing, weight-bearing position with a dramatic reduction in radiation dose—up to 10 times less than a conventional x-ray and up to 1000 times less than a CT (Computed Tomography) scan. Additionally, EOS images provide remarkable detail, enabling physicians to better diagnose and plan an effective course of treatment. "EOS can be utilized for patients of all ages," said Gordon D. Donald, III, MD, Managing Member and Director of Spinal Surgery for New Jersey Spine Group. "EOS is especially helpful in any situation where patients want to limit their exposure to radiation, and where long-length, weight-bearing images are needed. EOS truly represents breakthrough medical technology, and I believe every healthcare institution in the U.S. that currently images patients with a conventional digital x-ray will want to adopt this remarkable technology as soon as possible. Furthermore, because EOS uses considerably less radiation than a conventional x-ray or CT (Computed Tomography) scan, it is an extremely important advancement for children with pediatric scoliosis, a condition involving a curvature of the spine that usually requires repeated x-ray exams, perhaps as many as 20 to 25 radiological exams during the course of their clinical follow-up." "We are very pleased to announce the first U.S. installation of our ultra-low-dose EOS x-ray imager in one of the leading spine centers in the U.S.," added Marie Meynadier, PhD, chief executive officer of biospace med. "EOS represents a whole new paradigm for the safe and effective imaging of patients, and we are looking forward to rolling out this revolutionary technology throughout the United States." Arlington, VA (PRWEB) June 10, 2008 -- Twice as many Americans live with schizophrenia than with HIV/AIDS, but a major report by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reveals most Americans are unfamiliar with the disease. “Americans are not sure what to think about schizophrenia,” said NAMI executive director Mike Fitzpatrick. “They know schizophrenia is a medical illness affecting the brain, but it is largely misunderstood. There are gaps in knowledge — and access to treatment. Misinformation, misperceptions, and misunderstanding represent a public health crisis.” The schizophrenia report is available at http://www.nami.org/schizophreniasurvey. It is based on a survey conducted by Harris Interactive among the general public, caregivers and individuals living with schizophrenia. Approximately two million Americans live with schizophrenia. Two-thirds do not receive treatment, even though the disease can be managed successfully. The survey found the average age at onset was 21, but a nine-year gap exists between symptoms and treatment. • 85% of Americans recognize schizophrenia as an illness, 79% believe that with treatment, people with the diagnosis can lead independent lives, but only 24% are familiar with it. Many cannot recognize symptoms or mistakenly believe they include “split” or multiple personalities (64%). • 79% want friends to tell them if they have schizophrenia, but only 46% say they would themselves. Even with treatment, 49% are uncomfortable with the prospect of dating a person with schizophrenia. • Among people living with schizophrenia, 49% said doctors take their medical problems less seriously, even though the report notes that the death rate from causes like heart disease or diabetes is 2-3 times that of the general population. • A vast majority believe that better medications (96%) and health insurance (82%) would be most helpful to improving their condition, • Caregivers agree better medications are needed. Approximately 80% have difficulty getting services for loved ones, 63% have difficulty finding time for themselves, and 41% have provided care for more than 10 years. “We know what to do to increase recovery, but it requires public support, which depends on public attitudes,” Fitzpatrick said. The report offers five recommendations: • Public education Page 16/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) June 10, 2008 -- RareShare, a startup dedicated to building online awareness about rare medical disorders, has announced today that it has launched an early beta version of its health 2.0 social networking platform designed to bring together patients, families and healthcare professionals to share information and personal knowledge about rare diseases. "Our goal is to build a network of micro-communities where people can help each other by sharing firsthand knowledge about living and being affected by these medical disorders," explained Eric Steele, Co-Founder of RareShare. "By launching an early-beta version of RareShare, we hope gain further insight about our initial user-base to help improve the services and tools offered through RareShare," he added. The Site is currently organized into micro-communities, each dedicated to a specific rare disorder. RareShare members can join these micro-communities to begin collaborating with others. Presently, the RareShare network hosts over 500 different micro-communities and is expected to expand to over 1,000 micro-communities by the end of the summer. Membership to RareShare is free. To become a member, visit http://www.rareshare.org/users/new. About RareShare: RareShare was founded in early 2008 on the idea that there is a better way to bring together patients, families and healthcare professionals to share knowledge and personal experiences about rare medical disorders. While rare disorders may seem to impact only a small portion of the population, together they affect over 30 million individuals in the United States and Europe alone. In the United States there are as many as 1,500 diseases that qualify for rare diseases status. Due to the comparably low level of occurrences of individual rare disorders, there is often a lack of information and support for patients and their families. The RareShare micro-communities are designed for people to share experiences, explore treatment options and find support among others affected by the same disorders. Our Mission: We are dedicated to building international online communities designed to increase the level of communication and support among patients, families and healthcare professionals affected by rare medical disorders. (www.marketdataenterprises.com), a leading independent market research publisher, has released a groundbreaking new 145-page market study entitled: ''The U.S. Sleep Market.'' This is a complete analysis of all segments of the United States sleep aids business. "Of a total population of 305 million Americans, 58% are estimated to experience insomnia symptoms or sleep disorders. Companies across America are trying to sell us a perfect night's sleep with sleeping pills, premium mattresses, high tech pillows, white noise machines, sleep masks, aromatherapy, and more. Sleep disorder diagnosis and sleep hygiene has fast become a $23.7 billion a year industry," according to Research Director, John LaRosa. Major Findings: - Marketdata estimates that the U.S. sleep market was worth $23.7 billion in 2007. However, growth this year will be less than 1%, due to the recession, more home testing, and more generic sales of sleeping pills. To 2012, we forecast 8.8% annual growth. - The major anti-insomnia drug producers spent $619 million last year advertising Ambien CR, Lunesta and Rozerem, producing $2.7 billion in sales. However, this was down 18% as Ambien came off patent and sales of generics rose. New drugs are in the pipeline. - Sleep Labs, which perform studies to diagnose sleep disorders, are estimated to number 3,300+. The typical lab has revenues of $1.33 million and conducts 1,250 studies per year. Labs are located in hospitals, MD practices, universities, or are independent. This segment will be worth $4.47 billion in 2008. - A March 2008 ruling by the Center for Medicare Services will have a major impact on the field of sleep medicine. Portable devices may now be used for home testing, resulting in short-term uncertainties for sleep labs but boosting the market for CPAP devices - a $2.4 billion market that's growing 18% a year to 2012 and that's dominated by ResMed and Respironics. - The huge $13.7 billion retail mattress market and $900 million pillows market are being hurt by the recession. Retail sales are forecast to grow just 1% this year, but to rebound in 2009. Premium non-innerspring (air, memory foam) models are selling well. According to Research Director, John LaRosa: "As obesity rates climb and Americans age, more people are developing sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and other sleep disorders. Plus, stressors from the economy, terrorism, longer workdays, and women entering menopause are resulting in more sleepless nights. Some claim that 'sleep is the new sex -- we need more of it and can't get enough of it.' First launched in 1977, there are now about 3,300 'sleep labs' in the United States." Competitor Profiles provided for: ResMed, Respironics, SleepMed, Sleep Solutions, Sleep Holdings, Avastra Sleep Centres, Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Serta, Select Comfort, Simmons, Apollo Health, and Marpac. Note: Marketdata also operates a leading consumer healthcare website covering a wide variety of sleep disorder Page 33/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. (PRWEB) June 8, 2008 -- The website and newsletter Sports Injury Bulletin has announced the launch of a new report that helps athletes improve their core stability. The free report explains why good core stability is so important and how athletes can easily integrate specific training and exercises into their everyday routines. The report also discusses the injury risks faced by athletes who ignore core stability training. As well as detailing a variety of exercises to improve core stability, the report also outlines specific routines for beginners and advanced training techniques for professional athletes. Compiled by specialist sports therapists, the report takes athletes through each stage of the different exercises, explaining how they should be performed to get the best results. Also included are case studies showing the advantages of Pilates for improved core stability, as well as the benefit of training with a medicine ball. Many athletes underestimate the importance of good core stability, and even those who do know its true value normally focus all their attention on the abdominals. The Sports Injury Bulletin report aims to provide valuable information on the benefits of improved core stability and the different areas that athletes need to target. Jane Taylor, Editor of Sports Injury Bulletin, commented: "Everything in this report has highly practical relevance, right down to the invaluable set of training menus specially designed by our resident conditioning coach Raph Brandon which take up the latter section of the report. This is as close as it gets to a body conditioning toolkit." The free report on core stability is only available for download at the Sports Injury Bulletin website. (PRWEB) June 8, 2008 -- Almost a third of British people would not feel comfortable about wearing a hearing aid concludes a recent survey from Siemens Hearing. This contrasts to over 80 per cent who said they would be comfortable wearing glasses. "The majority of Brits seem to be stuck in a time warp when it comes to their perception of hearing," says audiologist Rob Ryman at Siemens. "The fact that more than twice the number of people would feel happier wearing glasses than a hearing instrument demonstrates that people probably still think of hearing instruments as clunky, protruding, banana-shaped devices." "If this is the case, it's hardly surprising that our hearing is relegated on our list of priorities," he added, pointing to statistics which show that 81 per cent of people have never had a hearing test, compared to just 10 per cent that have never visited an optician. 1 in 7 people suffer from hearing loss in the UK but with so few people having hearing tests, many are not aware of their impairment, especially if it is only slight. The reluctance to use hearing aids is often based on the view that they are unfashionable, but Rob Ryman argues that it wasn't long ago that glasses were viewed in a similar way. "They haven't always been the trendy, hi-design fashion accessory they have become today," he says. To counter this perception, Siemens Hearing has launched a new range of digital hearing aids that are both fashionable and discreet. Coming in smaller sizes and changeable colours, the new hearing aids can be matched to clothes and even be linked to MP3 players. For a free online hearing test and for more information on new generation of hearing aids visit the Siemens Hearing site at www.siemens.co.uk/hearing. ### Page 38/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. Administrators are now able to submit a request for information (RFI) within two-clicks by visiting www.AHPhealthcare.com and also begin comparing the many benefits obtained from AHP's streamlined management approach and experience. Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 7, 2008 -- Anesthesia Healthcare Partners (AHP) announces a new Web site that facilitates the evaluation process for hospital and surgery center administrators seeking to compare the costs related to anesthesia services, the expansion of anesthesia department coverage and the turnkey practice management solutions available. Administrators are now able to submit a request for information (RFI) within two-clicks by visiting www.ahphealthcare.com and also begin comparing the many benefits obtained from AHP's streamlined management approach and experience. "The new Web site was redesigned with our anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, employees, and future hospital and surgery center partners in mind by eliminating unneeded clicks and highlighting information relevant to each of these individual users from our www.ahphealthcare.com homepage," said Timothy Beisner, vice president of marketing. "The new Web site will not only help our future partners easily find the information they need to evaluate our company, it will also help educate healthcare facility administrators about the anesthesia services available to them as anesthesia subsidies continue to be one of the larger cost savings opportunities a hospital or multi-specialty surgery center can easily tackle." Highlights of AHP's redesigned Web site (www.ahphealthcare.com) include the following user-friendly features: • A welcoming voice now greets visitors and verbally summarizes the solutions offered. • Service options are now uniquely described for each type of facility that may require anesthesia services within one-click of the homepage; including teaching hospitals, multi-specialty, urology and endoscopy center facilities. • Hospital administrators can now easily request an anesthesia pro forma, revenue budget and staffing model to compare services within two-clicks. • AHP employees, anesthesiologists and CRNAs have one-click access to the company's intranet. • Anesthesia patients now have access to frequently asked questions within one-click. As the demand for safe, consistent and efficient anesthesia services administered by a premier anesthesia team continues to challenge many facility administrators across the country, including the ability to offer propofol sedation in an endoscopy and urology center setting, tools like www.ahphealthcare.com will continue to expand and help our nation's healthcare facilities evaluate the complex world of anesthesia services. About Anesthesia Healthcare Partners (www.ahphealthcare.com) Anesthesia Healthcare Partners was established in 1997 as an anesthesia staffing and practice management company. Mathis opens by introducing the severity of the crisis noting that "we are hemorrhaging nurses." The nurse profession has always been and remains a most vital part of healthcare. There is a simple truth about nursing and nurses that we would do well to keep in mind: both anecdotal reports and research studies have made clear that there is a direct relationship between adequate nurse staffing levels and positive outcomes for patients in every kind of clinical setting. We have reached a point in the history of nursing when worn out, quasi solutions simply do not get at the heart of the crisis. In a world that is actively progressing toward marketplace globalization it is not a valid solution to simply restate old problems in new terms. Real problems demand real solutions. The U.S. healthcare system has developed a consumption mentality model that impacts the global economy. "The global problem is complex requiring the collaboration of the world's great minds working in concert with one another. When the economic laws of supply and demand are at play it is a simple equation to most in the business of healthcare. However, the nurse shortage is not simply a set of return on investment ciphers designed to make more money. Mathis calls for healthcare CEOs and CFOs to take a more responsible role in solving the nurse shortage crisis--"Healthcare providers need to understand that their 'bottom line' is improved not only by reducing waste and inefficiency but, more importantly, by emphasizing quality and patient satisfaction as metrics for determining success". He takes a strong stand by proclaiming that the "other fixes have failed to solve the fundamental issues that have led to the global nurse shortage" because they almost exclusively try to answer one question, how do we get more nurses?". This is certainly an understandable and reasonable impulse--that's how we usually respond to a deficit, add more of whatever is lacking. In most contexts that would be the smartest thing in the world to do. But not in this context. The flaw in this approach is that when it comes to the nurse shortage, the numbers are a symptom of the problem and not the problem itself. The book takes on a serious look at social media and the cultural transformative impact of social networks upon the nurse profession. Social media provides the platform allowing the nurse profession to fully enter the 21st century; the platform which will allow all the other voices that need to be heard in the discussion about nursing to be able to speak to one another and not past one another; the platform which will allow nurses and nursing to become a modern profession- in perception and reality. Nursing must become a global integrated enterprise by use of tools such as MyNurseBook.com Mathis proclaims that "the failure to develop technology for the benefit of nurse professionals has been the unintended consequence of an ignorance of what nurses actually do and a blindness to the economic benefit nurses bring to healthcare institutions." When the healthcare industry begins to genuinely respect nurses, there will be a very real and far-reaching impact. About the Author: Shawn D. Cape Town, South Africa (PRWEB) June 6, 2008 -- Business experts, private sector CEOs and leaders in health called for intensified public private partnerships to promote development and economic growth in Africa during a closing session at the World Economic Forum today. During the session the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Zambezi Expedition was showcased as a successful model of a public private partnership that could be replicated for tackling other development challenges in the future. Private sector partners, ExxonMobil and Coca Cola, and representatives from the South African Development Community Chambers of Commerce used unique film footage from the 2,500 km voyage through 6 countries to describe how public and private sector collaboration could help trigger economic development and regeneration in the region. "The Zambezi is a potential gateway to development like other great waterways," said Dr Steven Phillips, Medical Director of ExxonMobil. " This ambitious malaria expedition has reached into remote communities and shown us what public private partnerships can do to advance industry, health and education in the region and make a difference to peoples' lives. " Panelists Prof. Awa Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) and Sipho Mseleku, CEO of the Association of SADC Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCCI) underlined the critical importance of political commitment in fighting diseases of poverty such as malaria. They called for increased multi-country collaboration with specific attention to strengthening community engagement against poverty and disease. "Malaria knows no borders and the Roll Back Malaria Zambezi expedition is a model for multi-country cooperation" said Prof Coll-Seck, "We hope that countries in other sub-regions will collaborate in this way because they have similar problems". Malaria kills more than 1 million people every year and is both a cause and consequence of poverty. With 90% of global malaria deaths, and losses of US$12 billion every year attributable to malaria, Africa bears the greatest burden of disease. However much progress has been made in recent years especially the increased distribution of insecticide treated nets in large parts of the continent. "Access is the foremost challenge along the shores of the Zambezi. We were able to deliver mosquito nets and malaria treatments to many communities - but that was only a drop in the bucket. The Zambezi could be used more effectively to transport all sorts of goods and services," said Helge Bendl, one of the expedition leaders who also cited regular flooding as a key hazard affecting the fragile livelihoods of riverside populations. About the RBM Zambezi Expedition: Sponsored by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Roll Back Malaria partners, the RBM Zambezi Expedition set out to rally political support for the fight against malaria and demonstrate the need for coordinated efforts. Bristol, PA (PRWEB) June 4, 2008--America Hears, Inc., today announced an agreement to equip its entire family of premium digital hearing aids with sophisticated sound-processing software from Dynamic Hearing Pty Ltd of Australia. According to America Hears CEO Henry C. Smith, naming Dynamic Hearing its Supplier of Choice and standardizing on the company's robust software platform will enable America Hears to continue expanding the global hearing-aid market by delivering the most advanced hearing aids direct to consumers and supporting them over the internet with a flexible choice of programmable solutions. Dynamic Hearing is a closely held Australian technology company that develops and licenses advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and software to international manufacturers of personal communication devices, including hearing aids and headsets. Its ADRO® (Advanced Dynamic Range Optimization) amplification technology is the most sophisticated software available for digital hearing aids. The ADRO® Digital Sound Processing platform's real-time statistical analysis and automatic-adjustment capabilities enable hearing-aid designers to optimize the listening experience with products that continuously adapt to the changing acoustical environment as well as to users' specific personal hearing profiles. According to Elaine Saunders, PhD, CEO of Dynamic Hearing, the agreement is the culmination of a long-term relationship in which America Hears has provided invaluable customer feedback and design experience for new versions of the ADRO platform. "Dynamic Hearing is focused on real-world solutions to people's hearing problems," Saunders said. "Our partnership with America Hears has enabled us to stay at the forefront of the hearing-aid industry with software that unleashes the digital power of each successive generation of new DSP chips." Dynamic Hearing's ADRO algorithm, developed for the current and future generations of powerful digital signal processing chips, provides performance superior to the compression technologies used in many of today's hearing aids. In trials conducted by the Cooperative Research Centre for Cochlear Implant and Hearing Aid Innovation, hearing-aid users preferred ADRO over compression technologies 74% of the time. America Hears is the world's only manufacturer of premium digital hearing aids to sell and support its products directly over the internet. By making appropriately priced hearing-assistance products easily available to a broader market than ever before, America Hears is helping to expand the hearing-aid industry, which has experienced disappointingly slow growth in spite of the rapidly growing population of Baby Boomers suffering from age-related hearing loss. Marmar, M.D., showed that among men who previously failed to achieve erections on Viagra, Levitra and Cialis type tablets, 40% achieved an erection sufficient for penetration during sexual intercourse after given a single dose of a novel treatment called TriMix gel. The research involved forty two (42) men diagnosed with erectile dysfunction and various other conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and removal of the prostate. The average age was 55. All trial participants had previously failed on Viagra, Levitra or Cialis type tablets. Test results were documented using various methodologies such as penile buckling pressures, RigiScans (an instrument that documents penile rigidity) and Erection Hardness Scores (EHS). All test participants experienced some degree of tumescence or increased blood flow and 17 of the patients or 40%, experienced erections sufficient for penetration during sexual intercourse. Typically, trimix compound in liquid form requires refrigeration and the patient must use a needle to self inject. TriMix gel does not require refrigeration and does not use a needle. It allows the patient to carry the medicine on his person at room temperature. More importantly, an ED patient would not have to use a needle to self inject before sexual intercourse. Dr. Marmar stated, "among a group of men who previously failed to achieve erections on Viagra, Levitra and Cialis type tablets, TriMix-gel demonstrated statistically significant greater Erection Hardness Scores. TriMix gel may offer ED patients an elegant alternative to penile injection." For more information visit: www.trimixgel.com. Contact T.J. Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) June 5, 2008 -- Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in retinal risk assessment for diabetics, announced today two Columbus, Ohio medical practices will collaborate to provide Retasure to regional diabetic patients. Canyon Medical Center is offering in-office retinal risk assessments and Midwest Retina ophthalmologists are providing grading services. Midwest Retina physicians will also read images for future Retasure primary care providers in central Ohio. "Canyon Medical Center and Midwest Retina are two of the region's most established and respected practices," said Scott Sanner, Senior Vice President for Digital Healthcare's North American Operations. "While we are thrilled to have both part of the Retasure network, the true beneficiaries here are Columbus-area diabetics." Canyon Medical Center is an 11 provider practice specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics. "All of our physicians provide treatment to diabetic patients and understand their high risk for serious eye disease," said Stephen Canowitz, M.D. "We don't intend to replace the services of the ophthalmologist, but we do want to make retinal risk assessments more readily available to our diabetic patients." The six Midwest Retina physicians specialize in treating vitreoretinal diseases across seven locations in central Ohio including Columbus, Chillicothe, Mansfield, Zanesville and Mount Vernon. Dr. Mark D. Lomeo will lead the practice's Retasure reading center. "We believe that early diagnosis and preventative treatment are vital to preserving sight in the diabetic patient," said Dr. Lomeo. "Working with Retasure brings the latest in telemedicine to central Ohio and gives many more patients the ability to avoid severe vision loss." The FDA-approved and HEDIS compliant Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours. There are an estimated 20 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients around the world have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software. Few patients currently receive osteoporosis treatment following hip fracture despite high risk of morbidity and mortality. Safety and efficacy profile of Reclast, already approved for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, reinforced in revised label. East Hanover, NJ (PRWEB) June 5, 2008 -- The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has broadened the US indication for once-yearly Reclast® (zoledronic acid) Injection to include the prevention of new clinical fractures in patients who have recently had a low-trauma hip fracture1. No other osteoporosis treatment has demonstrated a reduction of new clinical fractures in patients who have recently had a low-trauma hip fracture (e.g., due to a fall from standing height or less)1. A clinical fracture is defined as a composite endpoint of skeletal sites excluding finger, face and toe. The FDA decision is based on safety and efficacy data from the landmark Recurrent Fracture Trial, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, showing a significant 35% reduction in the risk of new clinical fractures in patients treated with Reclast3. "The consequences of osteoporosis can be devastating, particularly hip fractures. However, few patients actually receive treatment for the prevention of additional fractures after a hip fracture2," said Kenneth G. Saag, MD, MSc, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, University of Alabama at Birmingham. "In the first large scale clinical trial of its kind, these data support an efficacious therapeutic option for patients after a hip fracture." Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and can break more easily4. Around 10 million people in the US are affected by osteoporosis, which caused an estimated 297,000 hip fractures in the US in 20054. Of those patients who experience a hip fracture, almost a quarter of people over the age of 50 die from complications within one year4. Among those who experience a hip fracture, 85% need help walking at six months, nearly 20% who could walk before their hip fracture require long-term nursing care, and all remain at high risk of further fracture4. Yet, currently few patients are treated for osteoporosis following a hip fracture2. The Recurrent Fracture Trial involved more than 2,100 men and women aged 50 and older with osteoporosis who had experienced a recent low-trauma hip fracture3. Results showed that Reclast increased bone mineral density (BMD) and reduced the risk of new clinical fractures by 35% compared to patients treated with placebo3. The risk of new spine fractures was reduced by 46%3. The incidence of all-cause mortality was 9.6% in the Reclast group and 13.3% in the placebo group3. The updated US label further reinforces the safety and efficacy of Reclast, the only once-yearly treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis approved in the US and European Union (EU) (under the name Aclasta®) for the reduction in the incidence of fractures in all key areas of the body typically affected by this disease, including the hip, spine and non-spine1. Regulatory approval is also being sought for Aclasta in the EU for this broadened Page 65/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. This means a single treatment, along with daily calcium and vitamin D supplements, helps protect against fracture for a full year. "The new label reinforces the potential of Reclast for treating a range of osteoporosis patients," said Trevor Mundel, MD, Head of Global Development Functions at Novartis Pharma AG. "These data support the clear need to treat patients after hip fracture who are at risk of the potentially devastating and life-threatening consequences of osteoporosis." Reclast is already approved in more than 50 countries for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and in more than 70 countries for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone, the second most common metabolic bone disorder5. The active ingredient in Reclast is zoledronic acid 5mg administered once a year1. Zoledronic acid is also available in a different dosage under the brand name Zometa® (zoledronic acid) Injection 4 mg administered every three to four weeks in certain oncologic indications6. Patients should not take Reclast if they're on Zometa as it contains the same ingredient; if they have low blood calcium, kidney problems, or are allergic to Reclast or Zometa; or they're pregnant, plan to become pregnant or nursing. It's important for patients to drink fluids before getting Reclast to help prevent kidney problems. The most common side effects are flu-like symptoms, fever, muscle or joint pain and headache. Patients should tell their doctor if they have dental problems because rarely, problems with the jaw have been reported with Reclast. Patients should tell their doctor if they have low blood calcium or cannot take calcium and vitamin D, had surgery involving the neck or intestines. In patients with Paget's disease of bone, it is especially important for them to take 1500 mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D daily, particularly during the first 2 weeks after getting Reclast. Patients should discuss all medicines they're taking, including prescription and non-prescription, vitamins and herbal supplements. Patients should contact their doctor if they develop severe bone, joint or muscle pain, numbness, tingling or muscle spasms. WASHINGTON (Business Wire EON) June 5, 2008 -- Underscoring the scope of the problem, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) also released new research showing that the quality of care people receive can vary dramatically depending on their race and where they live. The $300 million commitment to improve health care in 14 communities, that together cover 11 percent of the U.S. population, is the largest effort of its kind ever undertaken by a U.S. philanthropy. Known as Aligning Forces for Quality, the community-focused program will lift the overall quality of health care, reduce racial and ethnic disparities and provide models for national reform. "Across America, there are serious gaps between the health care that people should receive and the care they actually receive," said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "Despite having the most expensive health care system in the world, patients are subject to too many mistakes, too much miscommunication and too much inequity. As a result, too many Americans aren't receiving the care they need and deserve. This unprecedented commitment of resources, expertise and training will turn proven practices for improving quality into real results in communities across America." The new research, conducted by the Dartmouth Atlas Project at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice for the Aligning Forces for Quality initiative, analyzes Medicare claims to illustrate staggering variations in health care quality across the country. Researchers examined five different measures of care at the state level and in the 14 Aligning Forces for Quality communities. Most strikingly, researchers found significant differences by race and by region in whether patients lost a leg to amputation, a complication of peripheral vascular disease and diabetes. African Americans lost legs to amputations at a rate nearly five times that of whites – 4.17 per 1,000 African-American Medicare beneficiaries, compared to 0.88 per 1,000 white Medicare beneficiaries. In Louisiana, the state with the highest rate of amputations, 1.66 of every 1,000 beneficiaries lost a leg to amputation in 2003-2005, compared to the national average of 1.14. Utah fared best – 0.50 per 1,000 beneficiaries. The report also demonstrates significant differences in whether people get basic recommended care – such as women getting regular mammography tests, or patients with diabetes getting essential blood tests. One in three women insured by Medicare are not getting recommended mammograms. Overall, the study shows 64 percent of the white women got mammograms, compared to 57 percent of African-American women. In Page 69/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. Our complete disclaimer appears here. - PRWeb eBooks - Another online visibility tool from PRWeb Mississippi, 57 percent of female patients aged 65-69 got mammograms in 2004-2005, compared to the national average of 64 percent. Maine fared best with 74 percent – a 17-point gap between the high and low states. About one in seven patients with diabetes are not getting crucial blood tests. About 85 percent of white patients with diabetes got the blood sugar control tests, compared to 79 percent for African Americans. In Alaska, 71 percent of patients with diabetes got an important test for blood sugar control every year, compared to the national average of 84 percent. Vermont fared best with 91 percent receiving the test annually – a 20-point gap between the high and low states. "These findings underscore the importance of the local health care system as the focus for efforts to improve care," said Elliott Fisher, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Center for Health Policy Research at Dartmouth and one of the report's co-authors. "In most regions, blacks are less likely to receive recommended care than whites, but the differences across regions are generally much larger than the differences within regions. And in some regions of the country, African Americans receive care equal to that of whites – but the care for everyone is well below the national average. These findings point to the critical importance of local efforts that bring together stakeholders to improve quality and reduce disparities everywhere." Aligning Forces for Quality will concentrate its resources in 14 communities across the country: Cincinnati, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Mich.; Humboldt County, Calif.; Kansas City, Mo.; Maine; Memphis, Tenn.; Minnesota; Seattle, Wash.; South Central Pennsylvania; Western Michigan; Western New York, Willamette Valley, Ore.; and Wisconsin. They were selected as part of a highly competitive process to find communities that were positioned to make fundamental and cutting-edge changes to rebuild their health care systems. "Doctors, nurses and hospitals – everyone in health care – want to deliver high-quality care," said Bruce Siegel, M.D., M.P.H., research professor in the Department of Health Policy at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services and the newly named director of the Aligning Forces for Quality national program office. "The fragmented nature of our health care markets and delivery systems often prevents key players from working together. By teaming up those who get care, give care and pay for care, we will help these communities achieve lasting change." Aligning Forces for Quality was originally launched by RWJF in 2006. In the first phase, the communities began efforts to improve health care for patients with chronic illness in outpatient settings, such as doctors' offices and clinics. With this expansion, Aligning Forces for Quality community teams will now strive to improve care for all patients across all settings by: Helping physicians improve the quality of care for patients; Giving people information that helps them be better partners with their doctors in managing their own health and make informed choices about their health care; Improving care inside hospitals, with a special focus on the central role that nursing plays; and Reducing inequality in care for patients of different races and ethnicities. RWJF has for years worked to develop strategies and tools to improve health care quality. These efforts include funding for the development of quality measures, early pay-for-performance experiments, a new model for providing chronic care and programs to improve cardiac care, nursing and eliminate racial disparities or to target specific diseases such as asthma, diabetes and depression. Aligning Forces for Quality will bring the proven practices developed in these and other efforts to bear in the 14 communities. With the expansion of its Aligning Forces for Quality initiative, the Foundation will also make available new content on the Quality/Equality section of its main web site, www.rwjf.org. The Quality/Equality Portfolio section of the site features an expansive library of new interventions, tools, resources and related videos to help providers and others improve the quality of care in their communities. (PRWEB) June 5, 2008 -- If you've ever heard about liposuction or its technique, you've probably heard of tumescent liposuction. Water-Jet Assisted liposuction was developed from the tumescent technique, allowing this new procedure to bring about better results. Water-Jet Assisted new technique makes it different from and superior to the tumescent technique, which will be discussed below in greater detail. Why Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction is safer and better: The Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction(WAL), also referred to as Body-Jet Liposuction, uses a thin, fan-shaped jet that is channeled into the fat tissue. As a result, the fat easily loses its structure and is released. For the Water-Jet, a pressure system has been developed. This pressure system directs the infiltration solution through a closed tubing system via a piston pump and into a very thin application cannula. The application cannula is surrounded by an external cannula, which can have different diameters and openings depending on its purpose. The surgeon who performs liposuction using the Water-Jet technique can choose the rate of infiltration and the level of pressure by using computer software. What make Water-Jet different? Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction is the state-of-the-art of liposuction. This is the latest technology of liposuction. Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction can be done in multiple areas of the body during the same session of surgery. This technology can apply to abdomen, arms, under chin, things, buttock and calves liposuction. Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction has the ability to maximize the fat suction to 5,000 - 7,000 cc. under local anesthesia without any side effects. The patient can return to normal life within 2 days because the recovery time is faster than other technologies. After the surgery, the patient can feel the smoothen skin with no bruise and pain. Comparing with Laser Assisted Liposuction (Smart-Lipo) and Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (Veser-Lipo), Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction produces no heat during the surgery. Therefore this technology is not harmful to the surrounding area of liposuction. The solution: To minimize the side effects of liposuction, this new technique was developed with a two-stage concept. Pre-infiltration produces rapid anesthetization and vasoconstriction in the liposuction treatment. Then, the liposuction will be carried out through a rinsing solution. The two-stage concept uses two tumescent solutions that are combined for the water jet technique. The infiltration is performed with a short-acting analgesic with rapid uptake. In this process, the infiltration is also Page 73/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. Our complete disclaimer appears here. - PRWeb eBooks - Another online visibility tool from PRWeb performed with a long-acting analgesic with slow uptake. The process is performed under continually added and almost immediate aspiration during the liposuction treatment. Therefore, the concentration in the rinsing solution can be reduced. The surgeon can avoid the "tearing up" effect because the Water-Jet technique gives the surgeon ability to easily "suck" the fat off the patient's body. Preparation: With the Water-Jet, the patient will be prepared as though for a typical liposuction treatment. Anesthetization and vasoconstriction take place over a shorter period of time, compared with the tumescent technique. The patient will be awake during the process and can work with the surgeon to obtain the desired result. The patient can get up during the treatment and look in the mirror to see the results. This is another advantage of the Water-Jet, since it gives the patient the ability to see the results, even before the process has ended. Result: As you can see, the way the Body-Jet performs the liposuction process makes it easier for the surgeon to remove fat out from the patient's body. To summarize, the advantages of the Body-Jet technique are the following: 1. The tissue is not destroyed. 2. Pain, swelling and blue patches are reduced. 3. A smaller quantity of analgesia is required. 4. The result can be optimized during the treatment. 5. Subsequent corrections are minimized. 6. The results can be seen immediately. 7. The operation period is significantly shorter. Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction in Thailand: Thailand is one of the most desire destinations for medical tourism. The reason that Thailand is so popular in cosmetic surgery is because the patients can travel to one of the most beautiful countries and have the cosmetic surgery done in the same trip. Comparing the cost of cosmetic surgery procedures, Thailand is 70% cheaper than the cost of having cosmetic surgery procedures done in European countries and United States. Liposuction is one of the most famous cosmetic surgery procedures in Thailand. However Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction technology is a brand new technology for liposuction, and only a few clinics and hospitals have this technology. SP Clinic is one of the most famous cosmetic surgery clinics in Thailand that reside in Bangkok. SP Clinic is the very first clinic that provides Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction, and already served more than 3,000 patients with this technique. Summary: Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction (WAL) or called Body-Jet Liposuction gives the patient better results and satisfaction. Water-Jet is the better choice comparing with tumescent technique, laser assisted technique or any Page 74/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release. Denver, CO (PRWEB) June 4, 2008 -- FASTAFF, a national healthcare staffing agency, has launched a new service called the Candidate Search Agent. This will make it easier than ever to match healthcare facilities with qualified nurses. Staffing executives at healthcare facilities need to sign up for a Candidate Search Agent on FASTAFF's Web site. By answering a few questions, including the nurse specialties needed and the location of the travel nurse assignments, healthcare staffing facilities can begin to receive new candidates based on their needs. Facilities will receive weekly emails with potential travel nurse candidates that match their criteria. It's an easy way to find qualified nurses fast. The Candidate Search Agent is based on responses from nurses who complete the "Design Your Ideal Job" online survey on FASTAFF's job board. This survey asks nurses about their specialty areas and if there are any particular states to which they'd like to travel. Once a travel nurse has completed a survey, their answers are uploaded into the Candidate Search Agent, matching them with facilities looking for qualified nurses. It's a great way for nurses to find work in their own specialty and in states they want to visit. FASTAFF's Candidate Search Agent makes finding the right travel nurse fast and easy. It's unique to FASTAFF, making them one of the only travel nurse staffing agencies to offer such a service. For more information about FASTAFF or to apply to become a FASTAFF travel nurse, visit www.fastaff.com About FASTAFF Travel Nursing FASTAFF offers rapid response travel nurse staffing for assignments in nationwide healthcare facilities. London, (PRWEB) June 3, 2008 -- Drinking guidelines based on a confusing minefield of alcohol facts and figures are leaving us in a daze when it comes to deciding whether our habits are safe or not. That's the message from Sue Allchurch, director of Linwood Manor Group, who argues that a single-minded focus on the consumption of alcohol units alone can distract some people from recognising that they have a serious drinking problem. For a start, she says, few people have a clear enough understanding of what a single unit of alcohol looks like, anyway. "If you imagine that a glass of wine at the pub counts for one unit, you're wrong. In the case of today's larger glasses, it's more likely to be three units," she says. Plus, she adds, few of us think in terms of units when we drink at home. And even in cases where people do understand how alcohol units are measured, and stick to recommended limits, it doesn't necessarily mean that they won't develop an alcohol dependency problem, she warns. "Bargaining and negotiating are all part of the alcoholic's mindset, even from the earliest days of their condition. So if you're telling yourself that you can have a few drinks tonight because you need to relax but will forgo alcohol for the next few days in order to 'make up for it' in terms of alcohol units consumed, you're already sowing the seeds of compulsion," she says. The word 'need' is the clue, she says. "If you get home and there's no wine in the fridge, so you have a cup of tea instead - that's OK. But if you make a trip to the shops to get the wine that you 'need' to relax that night, that's a clear warning sign. You may still drink just one glass of that wine and remain within safe drinking limits, but it's a precarious situation that could develop quite rapidly." Other people will consume a large proportion of their allotted alcohol units for the week in one session and think they are safe because they won't drink for the remaining six days, says Sue Allchurch. But that kind of alcohol abuse can be even more dangerous to health, she says, because short periods of heavy consumption followed by longer periods of abstinence - or 'binge drinking' -- can cause blood sugar levels to 'yo-yo', putting the body under great strain and potentially leading to diabetes. "Wherever there's a need to drink, there's a potential problem, regardless of the alcohol units involved," she concludes. ### Page 83/84 If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company listed in the press release.
