Languages, Cultures & Travel Division of UBC Continuing Studies, and will take place
in Bordeaux, France, which is 50 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 200 km north of Spain.
UBC participants will study French at the Bordeaux Language School (BLS), which
received the 2008 Excellence Award. This Excellence Award certifies that the school has
received excellent ratings in customer satisfaction according to the LanguageCourse.Net
review of language schools.
You will have the opportunity to learn French at your own pace during morning classes.
At the elementary level, classes will teach you to order food, ask for directions, shop at
local markets, meet new friends and inquire about travel arrangements. At the advanced
level, you will study French culture, current affairs and literature. All instruction will be
in French using various techniques to develop fluency. Instructors are language experts
familiar with the communicative approach.
In the afternoons you will participate in cultural activities in Bordeaux and neighbouring
cities and enjoy winetasting experiences in and around the area. You will also travel
through the forest of les Landes and visit the worldrenowned sand dunes in Le Pyla.
Also included in the program is a daytrip to the town of St. Emilion, famous for its
medieval architecture and ancient vineyards.
Bordeaux and its Region
Bordeaux, the capital of the Aquitaine region, was
founded in the third century B.C. and is situated at the
junction between the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers.
Set in the heart of southwest France, Bordeaux ranks
among Europe’s most beautiful cities. It offers visitors
an enchanting trip back into history with its thirteenth
century public squares in le Vieux Bordeaux,
flamboyant gothic churches such as la Tour Pey
Berland, and eighteenth century classical monuments such as le Grand Théâtre and le
Palais Rohan. Latin at heart, Bordeaux will seduce you with its original cobblestone
streets, elegant boulevards and lively food markets. In the evenings, you will enjoy the
city while walking along the neverending quays of the Garonne.
The medieval village of SaintEmilion will captivate you with its monolithic church, cloisters,
ramparts and winding stairways. Twelfth century villages called bastides and seventeenth
century castles are a common sight along the beautiful country roads in this area.
Above all, the Bordeaux region is worldfamous
for its variety of wines. While visiting such
famous châteaux and vineyards as Saint
Emilion, le Médoc, or les Graves, you will fully
experience the saying, "the Bordeaux region is
to be savoured just like its wines."
There will be an orientation meeting in Vancouver at UBC for participants before the
beginning of the program. Time and location will be given after registration. Please
